I am going to edit this and say that I cannot figure out if Steam Cloud works in OOTP or not.
You can enable Steam Cloud for OOTP but I cannot figure out if it is actually working as intended. On my other systems it never seems to pull my leagues over.

So you can't exactly say things like that and then worry about a 30% cut of your game.
OOTPD is in a much better place financially because of PT (which I am very happy about) and I no longer feel bad about that 30% cut.
I do what is best for me now.

I wouldn't want OOTP to cloud-save, to be honest. Even playing a single day's worth of games will change thousands of player files, creating a sizeable upload depending on league size...

Also, I'm getting sort of sick for having to defend buying the game on Steam.

I have 2 GB down and 1 GB up internet speeds. So usually by the time the game closes and I get back to Steam the cloud upload is done in FM which has some pretty large saved game files.

And I have no caps on my internet use either
Zurich besides being as close to a utopia on Earth can be, has amazing internet.

Here in Neck-of-the-Woods, far from Zurich, it's an entirely different story. Germany claims to be a high-tech country, yet outside of some metropolises the internet is probably worse than in Cambodia...

While I sympathize with this, I will not agree with it. Were OOTPB to go exclusively Steam, I would follow it just as I followed Civilization (begrudgingly). That said, though, I hope they don't.

I would prefer not having to be online to play. Yes, I know you can play Steam offline and I know download OOTPB needs to "call home" once in a while. I just would prefer not having Steam as the middle-man.

Steam itself has to frequently be updated. Patches come down whether you want them or not and sometimes, as we all know, you don't want the latest patch. I have control with download OOTPB. And don't even talk to me about cloud-storage of these thousands of files. I have better use for my bandwidth, thank you.

They probably will never do away with download OOTPB - I remember MH saying something to that effect - so I'm happy. But should he ever change his mind, I will follow him to Steam. Such is my commitment now to OOTPB.

i never used steam (except in Beta Testing) for a few years... but since i have lost my "unlimited" service and gone to a monthly limit, i started using steam mainly because the updates are considerably smaller. Once i figured out you could start and run the game in offline mode, it's been OK. Saves, back-ups etc all the same for me. Do i love it. Not really. Do i hate it, No. Once you get used to it, it's fine. a plus is there are a few things in the workshop that are nice additions, even if rather large in size.

If I could get the game three days early on Steam I would probably switch. I know, three days, right?

Well, in those three days I can import my game and build all of my views that don't come in on import. Also it takes time to build stadium cameras, that granted aren't as big of a deal with the ability to export them to all stadiums. But even after sharing to all stadiums there are usually some small adjustments to be made.

Now when the release version is released I have all of the drudge work done and I am ready to go.

Not sure why there is not a presale on Steam and just allow one to d'load the beta team version? There must be a reason, I guess if it was easy they would.

If I buy directly from Out of Park Developments, can I still add too Steam for Achievements? Just wondering since I have got most of the achievements on OTP 20 and I do mind enjoyment in unlocking them as I go. Maybe, I can still track them outside of Steam and it doesn't matter though

Ah, I'm the exact opposite. If it wasn't for OOTP, I would have never even heard of Steam. I think it was OOTP16 in which preorders came with a free Steam version as well. Tried it and I was hooked.

That's interesting. Whether we like Steam or not, we do need to thank it. The two biggest marketing coups for OOTPD so far have been when it was listed on Steam and, of course, when it was licensed by MLB and the players' association. All gravy from here on.

For me at least, Steam is the way to go. It has automatic patching and the Workshop is glorious!

Too bad Add-Ons Central is rather behind or I would order OOTP21 from the devs AND from Steam.

I prefer buying direct, but I am concerned that more and more of the mods and quickstars are being developed for Steam workshop only and will become unavailable to direct OOTP users, and that the company has all but abandoned Add-Ons Central and any resources to make them available, which was what first enticed me to try the game and get hooked on it.
That 30% may be the cost of doing business and letting another entity maintain the libraries of mods & quickstarts if the company doesn't care to do it. I am torn as to where to purchase this year, although I would like to continue buying direct, I feel like I missed out on the growing Steam workshop for the game this past year, and I can't afford to buy both.

I was searching the forums for this question though: does anyone know when the new, 3/20 OOP 21 version will be on Steam to purchase?

Like many have said: the auto patching and such is glorious (and I have some Steam gift cards I would like to use).

Thanks in advance for the 6-4-3 double play assist here.

Whoop - I just saw it at the bottom of one of the pages. But leaving it here in case others inadvertently missed it.

"Steam customers: The game will launch on Steam on March 20 with a one-week 10% launch discount. There is no Steam preorder available. Please visit our Coming Soon page and add OOTP 21 to your wishlist!"

I was a reluctant steam adopter when I believe it was Civ 4, maybe 5 that required it.

Now that I have it I buy everything I can on steam

I am old and spent countless hours in the 80s and 90s configuring games for DOS and early windows and it was a pain (but did build my IT skills which led to long term career so silver lining I guess)

Steam has removed 99% of that hassle and is simply a way easier way to managing licensing at this point. I see some people have negative opinions, but I have never had a single issue personally.

In general I am philosophically opposed to software pirating. I understand that if content providers are not compensated, no content. I feel that way x1000 on OOTP - I want the company to be wildly successful and rewarded for the amazing work they do.

It was Civ 5 and it was ultimately that game, too, that made me snap. Well, in combination with the Raccoons being in the molasses up to the fuzzy ears, and especially after Juan Diaz threw three wild pitches in one at-bat. That was the last straw. I needed something else to play and then I saw that Civ 5 was on sale. ALRIGHT. **** IT. I'm *getting* Steam...!

So, ultimately I'm here because some off-kilter, dented can aisle, buy one-get two lefty "specialist" did something... "special"......

Steam provides me absolutely nothing. Any game that is provided DIRECTLY from the developer, I buy from the developer. The deserve every dollar if they are providing me the means to purchase and update the game. I cringe when someone says they like their games in one place. I do too, on my computer.

For a hardcore gamer and those that are computer challenged, Steam might be a good option. Even then, I'd purchase directly given the option.
