Starting a league, Advice needed
Should we replay the 2003 season, skip the 2003 season and go to 2004, or should I sim the 2003 season but start league play with the 2004 season?

Not sure there is a correct answer to that one. Either put it to a vote of your initial group of owners or make the decision yourself.

Ask the owners of the league what they want to do once you fill out the league. That way you won't have a bunch of owners mad with your decision since they'll have the chance to voice their opinion.

This sounds like something you should know before you even start.

The OOTP community doesn't need yet another online league. I would suggest joining a league or two and just enjoying the game.

Yes, I see the frequent posts here about yet another current day MLB clone starting up with a cattle call for 29 owners, and I'm sure a lot of these fail. But can we tone down the cynicism and the unhelpful "don't do it" advice and maybe try to offer something constructive? In general it's probably true that you're better off joining some established leagues and getting some experience before starting a new league of your own. And certainly people looking to join a league are probably much better off joining one with an established track record than a new one. But even if that is the case here -- and the original poster may have prior experience for all any of us know -- that's their choice. (And by the way, it IS possible for a new league to be a worthwhile venture. I started a league with a few friends and friends-of-friends, and it's working just fine for us, thanks. I don't think the "OOTP community" has been harmed, and may in fact have been helped if some of my owners go on to become good owners in other leagues.)

I'd like to thank the Expos for the relative vote of confidence. I have run a league before, but not an OTOP one. The league had a decent but not great ten month run. It folded, about a month ago, mostly because have the league decided to quit in a one week span for some reason. Maybe everyone was upset about something but wouldn't, tell me I don't know. Yes a lot of members where going back to school or college but they had been members of the league when they where in school before. I wasn't a perfect commish and did mistakes especially early on. But I was very dedicated and had to work very hardly mostly because of the limitations of Baseball Mogul. Recruiting new GMs was tough party because nobody wants to play Baseball Mogul anymore and its hard to explain 15 openings. I also let the league fold because I wanted to go over to OTOP since it means a better league, less work, and more GMs. I've been a member of five OTOP leagues, three High Heat leagues, and of course the one Baseball Mogul league. Below is a link to our playoff site, old site, and new site which we never actually switched over too. www.geocities.com/remangiii/ws05.html (playoffs) http://www.geocities.com/simsitez/index.html (old site) http://www.geocities.com/remangiii/abl.html (new site) I wouldn't be using geocities for any OTOP league, of course and have been reading this board everyday for awhile. Don't worry, I might post here asking for a few GM's but I hope that won't be necessary. Back to the topic of my post; I'm will most likely skip the 2003 season and go right to 2004 but I wanted to see what people would have to say about it. I've mentioned it too likely owners as well. I would still like to hear anything anybody has to say about it. Almost all likely owners have crappy teams so they would want to move ahead. It also seems kinda of silly to me to replay the 2003 season. The drawback is that I would have to keep track of personal records by myself but that wouldn't be a big deal. Taking a poll on the subject after the league is formed isn't really an option since I intend to make some alterations to the league file prior to opening the league. |

As for when you should start, if you sim through and start in 2004, it would add a personalized touch to your league. Would help to make it stand out from the rest. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks.
I've actually decided to go with a historical league, starting play in 1996. |
