Season 40 (2058) - Discussion Thread

Ty is still getting on base around .350. Of all the Cobb’s, this one seems to be the best despite the defense ratings. Steals around 100 bases consistently. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Huntley's gotten out of control and needs to be stopped, pronto! We're in the midst of a 4 game set with them and just lost the 1st 2 by 4-3 scores dropping us 2 back. So it's up to us to keep them from running off with this. Naturally, half our lineup (5 of 9 regulars) is tired and will need a break and the bullpen is mostly tired too.
So, defense... It seems that this league might have a little better than normal defense in it which I assume is making our normally strong defense weaker? Our BABIP is unusually high and our 2 groundballers, Hubble and Johnson are just awful. For the 1st time ever, I sent Hubble to the reserve roster and I've relegated Johnson to MR and "Use less often usage" which means I'll have to rely more on Paige and Spahn (who normally wouldn't even be on the roster). Fortunately, we get a day off after Huntley and our schedule then becomes... Just as dreadful! Those Senators are up next for a 3 game set and then a very solid Memphis team comes to the Evergreen Forest, before we finally get a break with 19 straight against lower level teams. Huntley, on the other hand, has a tougher schedule for the rest of the month so we can still catch back up with them, but we really could use at least 1 win out of 4 against them. Edit: Tassie's helping out by taking 3 straight from the Senators (thanks guys!) and we eked out a 1-0 victory over Huntley to pull back to 1 GB. The Senators are in their worst slump of the season (I think) and I fear they'll snap out of it when we come to town. They took 3 straight from us when they last visited us and they can't keep playing like this so we're doomed.

Huntley has a really tough September schedule on top of whatever remains of August for them, so that's good to see. EDIT: Sens actually 0-6 for August, premonition maybe??? Last edited by pappyzan; 12-27-2019 at 01:35 PM. |

We get swept by Hampton Roads last month, and then come out and sweep your guys out of nowhere in the midst of our slump. Say what ? A number of my convictions are being severely tested

As expected, those Senators knocked us off again, right after we got back to within 1/2 game. And look how they did it... Another close one that was decided right at the end.
Huntley has now moved back ahead due to taking 2 straight from Tassie, both 4-3 scores. They also beat us twice, 4-3. What's up with that?! Imagine if every season were this competitive. So much fun!

Babe Ruth. He's had such an awful season, I've benched him. Seymour's not doing great, but at least he's not been awful so he'll stay for now. Ruth was playing 1st, but I moved Frank Robinson there and put Seymour in LF so that also gives us a defensive upgrade.

The season has taught me a few things though, in that my pitching was too right centric, and that we relied on Ty Cobb too much given his limitations. So my Cy Young wish fund has been used in other ways to rectify a few things. Took me ages to save those PP's, but we weren't that close to getting there anyway. So I have added some new toys over the last few days. Tinker time

![]() Thinking about hiding Seaver as 5th starter so he only screws up a game or two every couple of weeks tho. He's still getting pummeled like an old musty punching bag. |

As we watch the NC East from afar and giggle, the Frogs have had quite a topsy-turvy 2058 season in P466. Actually needed to win the final 2 sims last night to prevent having a losing record for yesterday (hasn't happened in quite a while). Then, the Frogs have channeled that momentum into today, and find themselves back in the hunt for #1 playoff seed.
You know what I always say, it's best to fight cheese with cheese. As the lefty team Cigar City Lagers have keep pace admirably (currently 8.5 games back), I am preparing a present especially for them down the stretch where we play 8 more games. Reserves upon reserves of LHP starters are standing by especially to face them and their zero RHBs. We're talking 98 Vida Blue, 100 Johan Santana, 96 Jon Matlack, 99 Herb Pennock, 94 CC Sabathia, 94 Bob Veale, 97 Ron Guidry, 94 Steve Carlton. Heck, might even pull 99 Brecheen and 98 Bumgarner out of the bullpen if they are rested enough. I figure with a 4.10 starting pitching ERA (7th in AC) maybe we want to try something a little bit different.

We're going up against a team with a .392 WPct, so no problem, right? Well, they've got Perfect Walter pitching for them so big problem. But what's interesting is his career totals. He's got 749 W, he's won the pitcher of the year 27(!) times, MVP 14 times and has been an all-star 34 times. Not surprisingly, a lot of those years were spent in the lower levels - 22 years in perfect and 19 before that.
So Huntley and the Raccoons keep taking 1st, then losing it. We've got 1st again by a 1/2 game, but The Big Train will probably derail us. What I can't figure is Washington. They're only 3-12 in August and they're losing to some weak teams. Perhaps, they're just holding back to make things interesting and then they'll get super hot and blow past us all. Yeah, that must be it. p.s. - I've obviously got too much free time today.

Trenton is at 51-71 and almost in free fall losing 5 in a row now. One step above heading south to Gold.
![]() Denver is 60-63, thanks to Cy Young, Turkey Stearnes, and Stan Musial. ![]() ![]()

The Flyers are now 34-15 in the 2nd half, and have been winning most of the games that we're "supposed to" on the schedule but gone is that uncanny ability that seemed to exist with the Mets-only team to win games or even entire series that we had no business winning. ...For example we have a 1 game lead in our division right now...we were a total of 4-2 against the 2nd place team on the road as "the Mets"., Swept right out of their ballpark in the 2nd half, though...0-for-3.
So anyway there's about a month left and we have a pretty important 6 games against them. 3 are on the road & 3 are at home.

Finally moved Seaver to the reserve roster for the stretch run everybody, this is easily the worst season he's had in 32 years on the team. Pulled up LHP Tudor for his Senators debut and in short work already has a worse WHIP and BABIP than Seaver ever did, but has a couple of saves and hasn't yet given up a run.
After starting 3-13 for August, also shook it up by benching 100 Guerrero Jr, splitting his job between 97 Bill Terry and 94 Wright, who were only PHs off the bench before that; Guerrero is pinch hitting for the duration. Shuffled it up a bit by giving a spot start to Smoltz and Brecheen, temporarily moving Walt Johnson and Pedro to BP duties; they're back where they originally were in the rotation now tho. Gave a few LH bats some starts against the Southpaws and their LH stadium, since they're so hard to beat at home with righties. The Cheaters finished Aug 11-1 for a sweet 14-14 Aug record, they have as much of a shot as Huntley/Evergreen/Southern at the division if they finish up Sep/Oct strong. Need to leapfrog Huntley & Evergreen, and also stay ahead of Southern to do it tho. Current standings shown below. Last edited by pappyzan; 12-28-2019 at 02:32 AM. |
