Best Gold Card - 80-89 (Overall and Bang-for-Buck)?
Saw someone else declare on the boards that the Eck 89 card was the best Gold card overall. Meanwhile, I think the Furillo 85 card is a great value at about $2K. Apples and oranges, I guess.
What say you? What's the best outright Gold card in your opinion? Best bang for buck Gold card? |

The live Michael Brantley isn't too bad. He always seems to hit around .300. He's an 82 or 83 card. Good value.

My pick is Hugh Duffy. Harry Heilmann never did anything for me when I had him.
![]() A bit costly at over 20k, but he'll hit at all levels pretty well. |

80 Borbon has been one of the best relievers for me across 3 teams at Perfect. And especially with collections coming up, that difference between 80 and 89 (like Eck or Rollie Fingers) is really significant.

84 Pesky and 89 Duffy, both can easily make plenty of starting PL rosters. 84 Pesky has been my starting SS against RHP for the past 17 or 18 seasons, Duffy can hit both RHP/LHP and play LF pretty well.
84 Erstad/Kaline are great to bring in when you need a glove in OF, 88 Boudreau when you need a glove in IF. Last edited by pappyzan; 09-10-2019 at 01:19 AM. |

87 Kirby Puckett has been terrific for me, cost 7k, trains up to an 87 RF. Mine has earned 2590 PP in juts over 2 seasons, and has just earned a Perfect League player of the week achievement, got a platinum stick at RF in Diamond.
Kevin McReynolds is the best low cost gold CF imo, picked him up for under 2k, hits with some power and has a great glove, though gold league is probably his ceiling

I run 80 Pesky and 89 Cronin, if you like middle infield D. I also run Carew, who's a good player, but I keep looking to try to find an upgrade there that makes sense for my roster.

84 Pesky plays SS (albeit only vR) on my Perfect League team that made the WS and won 110 this last week. 89 Maddux is also quite good off the top of my head.

I have been extremely surprised by how well the SE Roy Sievers has done for me, even up in Perfect. It is a surprisingly consistent and balanced card. With a last 7 currently sitting well below 2k, this card is great value.
I could name others not mentioned here (Cecil Travis, Cool Papa Bell, et al), but they're a bit pricier.

88 Boudreau has been a staple of my team since the first perfect team season, stellar defense and gets on base at a decent rate. Consistently in the 3-5 range for WAR.
The 2nd contender is the 82 Ichiro. High average and elite defense...I finally replaced him on my main team with the SE Ichiro.

He plays in my perfect league team. Doesn't start but plays every position so is the perfect backup. Hits fine as a back up and runs well. |

Boy I hope you're right, because I picked him up last season in my Silver OL team.
He played 155 games for me, starting 151, despite not being in the starting lineup in any position ![]()

84 sisler and burgess (the catcher) and beyond amazing hitters both over .320 for 4 seasons each in perfect for me.
No defense for either but doesn’t really matter

Dihigo is good in Perfect Leagues, so he should kill it in Silver. He can also pitch if you set him to be a two-way player. He is a pretty decent long reliever.

The best gold cards I've used are 87 Raines and the 88 Kuo as a setup man. 89 Pujols has also been consistent if not spectacular.

I'll add 83 Jim Gilliam, 84 Micky Cochrane, and 89 Dennis Eckersley to the list and second Pesky, Cronin, Carew, Ichiro, & Burgess. All of these cards are solid contributors to my SmallBallers (contact/gap team). I also have Heilman on this team, and he's pretty good too, but he's got huge splits. I think he is best used as DH against lefties only. In that role he is solid, but is never going to contribute a ton, just due to limited at bats.
For my SaberCats I haven't had as much success with gold cards. Power & Eye seem to affect the overall rating quite heavily, so it's hard to get good offensive players below diamond. On the pitching side though there are some good options for Groundball types - 89 Maddux, 85 Brett Anderson, 82 Reuschel, 86 Tommy John...these guys took me as far as winning a diamond WS, but mostly struggled in perfect. For well-rounded players, I've had success with the aforementioned Tim Raines, and 87 Francisco Lindor is pretty solid as well. |
