REAL LIFE IN 1951
April Yours truly, EC, grew up in Mobile, New Orleans and also spent a lot of time in Northwest Alabama in the Tri-Cities area, Florence, Sheffield and Tuscumbia. Living in Mobile and New Orleans I fell in love with the Southern Association, the Mobile Bears and the New Orleans Pelicans... I got to see many games in the 1950s... also completely devoured the sport pages of the Mobile Press-Register and the New Orleans Times-Picayune... the Tri-Cities Daily and the Florence Times, too... that's how EC got educated. Here is an article about the SA on opening day, 1951... it gives a little bit of insight into the inner workings of minor league baseball... the players you started the season were not the ones you usually ended up with... still there was some continuity year-to-year... some career minor leaguers would play for a certain teams for several years... they played baseball in the spring and summer, then went home and got an off-season job in the fall and winter... you could make decent money in the Southern Association, but it couldn't be your only job. I really kick myself for not taking advantage of talking to the Major Leaguers like Luke Appling, Rip Sewell and Dixie Walker... but, hey, a 9-year-old is not aware of his big world... my world was much smaller and my interests were limited... I realized this in later years and regret it... I worked as a ball boy and clubhouse attendant for the Mobile Bears for several years in '56 and '57... my, oh, my... that was a wonderful time... got to meet and hang around future major leaguers Gary Bell, Bill Dailey, Dick Brown and Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew. Monday, April 23, 1951 MUSTANGS DO IT AGAIN! Hard to believe the hapless Stockdale Mustangs have whipped first place teams two weeks in a row in the North Island Recreational League... Sunday they upended the Dutton Coyotes 7-5 for their second straight upset after losing their first six games of the season... defending league champion Kofa got back in the hunt with a 3-0 victory over the New Yerby Yankees... thanks to the help of the Mustangs and the Kings, this enabled the Jackson Jackalopes (6-2) to take over the top spot... it had been a three-way tie for first place... the Jacks defeated the Union Heights Hackers 7-3 and moved a game ahead of Dutton (5-3) and New Yerby (5-3)… Kofa (4-4) is two games off the pace... despite their startling success the past two weekends, Stockdale (2-6) is still in the cellar with Union Heights (2-6), Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-26-2019 at 01:47 PM. |

Saturday, April 28, 1951 CRITICAL CLASHES IN NIRL FIRST DIVISION Two of the three games are critical in the North Island Recreational League... first place Jackson (6-2) plays at home against second place New Yerby (5-3) in the prime contest... while the Kofa Kings (4-4) will host second place Dutton (5-3)... in the other game, one of the basement dwellers will escape last place as Stockdale (2-6) tries to win its third straight on its homefield, opposed by the Union Heights Hackers (2-6). None of the top three teams in the NIRL Second Division play each other... first place Joliet (7-1) is seeking its eighth consecutive victory in Wafford... the last place Eagles (2-6) are on a five-game losing skid... runner-up Theodore (5-3) will attempt to make West Chester its fourth victim in a row... and second place Avalon (5-3) will travel to Kinston (2-6). MY LIFE:
EC JUST HAVING FUN IN 1951 Just to refresh your musical memory, beginning in early March, Perry Como was on top of the Billboard pop charts for over a month with a beautiful ballad "If"... on April 21 a husband and wife team, Les Paul and Mary Ford knocked Mr. C out of the number one spot with "How High the Moon". Les Paul is one our greatest guitar players... actually he may be "the" greatest guitar player... and he still plays every weekend at a New York City nightclub... Paul is around age 90 or so... he was the first to do "multi-tracking"... added tracks together to get a new sound on record... in the late '40s and early '50s Les Paul was involved in the development of two-track tape recorders... Ampex was one of the first tape recorder companies. Les Paul would set up microphones in his bathtub to get echo effects or reverb on his guitar and his wife's vocals... this really added a unique sound to recordings... the technique was known as "overdubbings"... playing two or more tracks together and making them into one single track. Get ready for some fancy singing and great guitar picking. Here they are on CBS Radio doing their #1 hit "How High the Moon": https://www.bing.com/search?q=how+hi...dbcb0658e4bad3 Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-30-2019 at 05:48 PM. |

Saturday, May 5, 1951 JACKS-COYOTES FEATURE GAME IN NIRL FIRST DIVISION The North Island Recreational League has a barnburner in the First Division this weekend... first place Jackson (7-2) will engage the runner-up Dutton Coyotes (6-3) Sunday afternoon at Dutton Civic Stadium... also on the slate are third place New Yerby (5-4) at home against last place Union Heights (2-7) and fourth place Kofa (4-5) on the road in Stockdale (3-6) against the fifth place Mustangs. There's also a good one scheduled in the NIRL Second Division between the league-leading Joliet Green Giants (8-1) and the third place Theodore Bobcats (5-3)... Joliet is on an eight-game winning streak... second place Avalon (6-3) will play last place Wafford (2-7) at Wafford Field... the third game on the agenda is last place Kinston traveling to play the fourth place West Chester Comets (4-5) at Township Park. |
