Curious: How many spend real $$$?

As I bounce back and forth between Silver and Gold, I was wondering if that's my ceiling unless I start spending real money to buy points. In general, do most people who get to Diamond and Perfect leagues have to spend money to stock their teams??? I've never picked up ANY player with an auction value > $7,000... so does that relegate me to a glass ceiling of, say, Gold leagues?

There are plenty of teams that haven't spent any (or much) money in Diamond or Perfect. Check out the "doldrums" thread for an example of a bunch of teams in Perfect that are Free or Near Free To Play. It just requires patience and a desire to work the auction house (or luck in opening packs!).

I've got a FTP packs-only team in Diamond, a FTP team in Perfect, and 2 in Gold. So it's definitely possible to get there.

Ah, but the second resource mentioned there is TIME... oh, also PATIENCE. Neither of which I have LOL. So probably a lifetime in Silver/Gold for me! But at least it's fun.

I've spent a fair amount of real money on one of my teams.

You can guess which one.

Will never spend real money. Have two teams in perfect leagues right now on track to make the playoffs for the first time.

I’ve got four teams in Perfect right now as a FTP. A couple of them are about to get kicked out of Perfect, but that is neither here nor there.

Is it common to have three of your teams in the same league (in this case, .406)?

it is super easy to make perfect without buying points, although you need to be active on the auction house flipping cards instead if you want some of the more expensive cards. There are lots of underpriced value players in the meantime.

I spent $40 (i.e. nothing) on one of my teams and have spent nothing on either. I got lucky by pulling Ozzie Smith 90's on one of my teams but I wasted 90% of those on some of the worst pack pulls I've ever had (300 packs, only perfect was Chapman and no lucrative diamonds worth more than 30k). Propelled me from Silver to Perfect in three weeks though.

The FTP forum organized leagues (Near Free-to-Play (NTFP) and FTP Our League (OL)) are in P406 this week, so there are a handful of forum users with a couple teams there.

I have three teams and haven't spent a penny on any of them. Basically, it's all about learning what cards perform better than advertised.

Knowing the over achieving bargains can get you there without luck or playing the AH. Though it seemed easier to find bargains in PT19 than PT20.

yeah, people know what to look for now and the unsung heroes don't have their overall rating sandbagged by 15 points

My uncle always used to tell me, "There are two types of people in life: those with money, and those with time. If you don't have the money...you better make the time."

Harsh...but true.

FWIW, I've spent $50 on my main team the Chaos Wolves and I'm getting really good at getting into the playoffs and exiting quickly LOL.

I spent $5 on one team simply as an expression of gratitude to the OOTP team for their continued work on the product beyond the initial purchase price.

My 1st team was in Perfect, but was relegated (I sandbagged to get out, and yes, I feel shame...). My second team has been in Perfect for a few seasons now (even made Wildcard once, or came close, I think). All of my (few) superstar players on all three teams came from random draws farmed from in-game pack awards or completed collection missions, and about half of them started out gold and went diamond (or better) during the season.

So, YES, you can get to perfect as a free team. You'll probably get stomped by a pod of whales, but it is definitely doable through building a good team, choosing a good strategy for that team, and adding in a little AH magic to pad out the weak spots.

Good luck, and don't give up!
