Sweeney gets 3000th hit, career ending (?) injury the next day
Late in the 2014 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, my starting 1B Travis Ishikawa went down with a torn ACL. He was out for the remainder of the season, and wouldn't be back in the lineup until sometime next May. 38-year-old Wes Helms, who had been great against LHP, but struggled against RHP, finished the season at first.
Looking at the free agent market, I wanted someone who could put up decent numbers for the first couple months until Ishikawa could return, and wouldn't cost a whole lot of money. I signed Mike Sweeney, who hit a bit over .300 with 20 HR a year over the past few seasons, but at age 41, seemed to be declining quickly. I also noticed that he had 2971 career hits. In early May, I brought Ishikawa back from the DL, but kept Sweeney in the starting lineup because he was still putting up good numbers. Two days after Ishikawa was activated, Sweeney got his 3000th and 3001st hits. The next day, Sweeney was hit by a pitch. This gave him a broken wrist, and he would be out for the rest of the season (and at age 41, this was likely his last year). Anyway, thought this was kind of weird, so I posted about it on the internet. Oddly enough, immediately after the injury, Ishikawa complained about lack of playing time. I guess you're going to get your wish! |
