Historical playthroughs

I'm always playing historical playthroughs and I've noticed an interesting thing when I did some experimentation with the editor. Some of young historical players, like Wally Backman in 1983 have lower potential scores than their current ability. What does that mean? Wally had never had a real season before and at 23 he is still young enough to develop significantly, yet his potential seems to be much (20-30 points) lower than his current ability, it matters the most with his power which is 20 now and the potential is 13. I'm playing with OOTP development system on, does that mean that he will become a really bad player power-wise soon? I'm assuming that potential ratings don't change at all during the game.

This seems to be the case with all of my historical playthroughs. Many players have their potential stats lower than their current ability, in all eras.

Checked a few others on my team

Keith Moreland - 29 with some of his best seasons ahead of him

BABIP 106 - pot. 100
Power - 120/96 - pot. 105
Eye/Patience - 112/90 - pot. 99

Herm Winningham - 21, again he has some of his best seasons ahead

BABIP - 147/150 - pot. 113

Sometimes just a few or one stat is much lower than the potential value, but you get the picture. This happens often with players that were alright, but not great.

Dwight Gooden is a great example too:

Fastball - 164/ pot. 133
Curveball - 190/ pot. 164
Slider - 77/ pot. 66
Changeup - 121/ pot. 106

There's a setting on the Global Settings tab under Player Rating Scales. Show Potential < Actual. By default, this is usually set to No, adjust. It sounds like you may have it set to Yes. If you select "No, adjust", the potential will never be lower than the actual.

Also, keep in mind, if you have the development engine on with historical, players will not necessarily produce the results you're expecting. They will essentially become fictional players with historical names.

I loved it when the nicknames from the past were actually mean insults to the player. Dick "Dr. Strangeglove" Stuart was awful defensively. There was one pitcher nicknamed "Losing Pitcher" and another "Line Drive".
