Triples from players that have 30 spd and 50 br
Brandon Crawford from the Giants hit a pretty normal deep ball that bounced and went into the RF's glove. But Crawford legged out a triple WITH EASE.
I go to check his ratings saying to myself, "holy crap he better have atleast 70 speed or something cause he FLEW around the bases" I look and he has 30 speed and 50 baserunning. Are we serious? This has to be a graphical error in the game. I wish I could replay the baserunning. He destroyed those bases. Last edited by joejccva71; 03-29-2019 at 09:14 PM. |

The graphics are an "artistic representation" of what happened. The text in the PbP is "canon".

If Brandon Crawford is a triple hitting machine then his speed needs to be higher than 30 and baserunning needs to be higher than 50.
Right now Crawford can leg out a triple that really should be a double. But yet Travis Jankowski can't get from 1st to 3rd on a decently deep base hit, and he has 70 speed and 75 baserunning. Something is not right with this. I don't even care about graphics. |

Because if it is just one triple then it sounds like the graphical representation was just not very good on this play. You say you don't care about graphics, but of course we are all used to seeing baseball with our eyes and even if we tell our brain that the PBP is the actual description of what happened on the play and the 3D graphics, as much improved as they are, are also still a work in progress, we might have a hard time over-riding the impact of what we see happening. I'm suggesting that he hit a triple that should have been a triple, but that it looked to you like it should have only been a double and he stretched it to a triple. Not that your eyes are lying to you, just that the graphics were probably misleading. A single triple really isn't indicative of much at all. Most players, even the slowest, will get a triple at some point in their career. Last edited by BirdWatcher; 03-29-2019 at 10:19 PM. Reason: sorry- just a lot of sloppy writing in there. |

I said triple hitting machine because another poster said he led the LEAGUE in triples in 2016. So yea...triple hitting machine if he led the league lol. Like I don't have a problem with him getting triples, but dont tell me he's getting that when he has a speed of 30 and a baserunning of 50. Bump his speed up to what it should be. A player with 30 speed shouldn't be trucking around the bases like Billy Hamilton. Last edited by joejccva71; 03-29-2019 at 10:56 PM. |

I don't know enough about Crawford to make judgments about whether the ratings in OOTP are correct. He had two seasons where he hit a good number of triples(10 in 2014 and the aforementioned 11 in 2016), and in every other season he hit from 1 to 4. Nothing to indicate superior speed. Over the course of the past 2 seasons Crawford has hit 3 triples in 1,164 plate appearances. In that same period he has stolen a total of 7 bases while being caught 10 times. So, I'm not saying your wrong about this. I'm just not convinced I've seen any evidence that you are right. Last edited by BirdWatcher; 03-29-2019 at 11:16 PM. |

The game was in San Diego, not SF. Is Petco Park known for triples? Cause Evan Longoria got one also in the same game. Two triples by two pretty slow players. Now I realize other factors come involved, but in a game which is mainly about numbers , it's frustrating for 30 speed and 50 BR players to knock down triples on me, while my 70 speed and 75 BR can't get from 1st to 3rd on a gap hit ball without getting thrown out at 3rd. I mean maybe I'm looking too much at the "ratings" and not using magical intuition. I guess I just need to look at all the "what ifs" in the game of baseball. I mean it could have been a very windy day that day that pushed Brandon Crawfords legs faster around the bases...who knows. I'll use my imagination more.

baserunning rating isn't about doubles and triples, or at least not a huge part of it in my experience. i think it's more geared to players on base already. out of the box it's fairly straightforward what to do for everyone, even an imbecile. (technical term, google it - moron, imbecile, idiot etc -- real scientific terms that have been ba$%ardized).
you can see that ratio in the editor with comissioner mode on. 2b:3b -- this is going to be the largest single factor of how many triples they get beyond the average ratio (if zero is value=average ratio, whatver they calculated that to be) you can have a very slow person who gets triples in ootp. whether that's accurate or not... i don't know, but i also don't think it's nearly as important as where you hit the ball, although it may be a small portion of the pie -- making that choice to stretch or not... which again, may be solely about eh 2b:3b ratio under the hood for that player. i saw something that was funny a few years ago. i guess some journalist or sportscaster was beating up alex gonzales for being so slow... then, they had a race. it was a total joke. a "slow" athleete isn't really that slow. even a slow baseball player, excluding fat puds, are twice as fast as you or i. even the "slower" ones have enough to get triples when you hit to the right place. I'm sure speed is a component, but the 2b:3b ratio isn't for nothing and it has a HUGE impact when you play around with it. now, more so than doubles, but as you perceive doubles, how much is it about speed and how much is it about a well hit ball to the right area? sure it may be +X% or whatever with some extra speed, but it's a small portion of the pie. a triple would be a slightly larger piece accounted for by speed, applying common sense. baserunning when you hit a ball is really not a skill. you run hard out of the box... it's not a choice. after that, it takes some understanding and care, of course. it should be apparent for any non half-wit to know when the cutoff is for taking another base based on where the fielder is at in the process of throwing it back. it won't increase their triples to have higher baserunning, i'd guess, and if anything increase the total 3b due to dumb-luck with low baserunnign skills. why? Because, you will get more triples if stupid and try to do it more often along with more outs created needlessly -- once in a while mistakes will be made, so it can only increase # of triples not reduce them with poor baserunning decisions. a good baserunner won't cut it as thin and won't take as many risks, therefore should get fewer triples all other factors remaining the same, but provide greater utility to the team by avoiding stupid outs. |

yeah, not physics-based graphics.. .at least directly..
physics are built into the statistical probabilities for various results to occur -- in proper proportion relating to stats and AI settings. check that 2b:3b ratio.. i bet that guy has a .200+ for that value... that would be very elevated from average.. even ~.150+ will give a good bump to 3b, if not mistaken. how many dobles to triples on average? 8k to 800? 10:1 or ~.100 (.091 is likely ~average ratio, so anything above should have an elevated 3b to 2b outcome... extreme volatility not to be ignored!) all that relates to is that the player hits the gaps more consistently thanothers... better control over where the ball goes vs. pure luck of timing of contact. the player with ahigher 3b:2b ratio hits where they want to hit more often than average.
