Question about defensive position training

I thought I saw something about this on here at some point but I haven’t been able to find it, so here is my question:

Can a player be trained up at a position that they already have a low position rating for? So, if a player generally has pretty good OF Range and OF Error ratings but they have like 80+ in LF and 25 in CF, will they get better at CF or be stuck at that low number? I know they could be trained up in RF where they don’t have a position rating yet, but will the CF rating ever change?

I believe the rule is that any position that the card has initially is showing the max ratings. They will not go up any higher.

The problem, when looking at cards on the auction house is that you cannot easily tell what positions are the default ones and which ones the player has started training on.

No, there are certainly players who have a second position shown on the card, but can train higher there. Willy Adames on his card shows as about a 55 at 2B, but can train up to a 75, I think.

I thought the same on primary position max ratings...until I looked at a Brian Giles (LF) on the auction house. His LF rating was in the 60's. My Brian Giles LF rating is in the 80's.

Unless I'm missing something it seems some primary positions can go up.

I believe for primary positions, it's probably 99% of the time maxed by default.

For additional positions, they are maxed much less often, but sometimes are. Probably has something to do with how much time the player actually played each position.

Future Legends seem to be the biggest exceptions to what you'd expect. For example, Victor Robles I believe is the only player in the game maxed at all 3 OF positions by default (or at least he's the best defensive player maxed at all 3). While Tatis Jr. has one or 2 unmaxed positions, if I recall correctly.

I've trained up a ton of people at positions for my defensive team. Since I already had Aparicio at SS, I trained my Simmons at 3B. I think he started somewhere in the 70's, and now he's up to 117.I also moved the rookie Tulowitzki to 2B where he had no rating to start, and he's at 110 now. However, I have not found any card where you can train them any higher at their original position. Aaron Hicks will go up to 80 and 90 in RF and LF respectively, but he'll always stay at 59 in center.

Willie Wilson also increases from 60 to 67 at his primary position, CF
