Now in year 5 my Hungary Hungry Hippos have suffered, what I believe, is their first month with a losing record.

The team is built upon run prevention first and they are doing okay at that but the offiense is just not scoring right now.

Heading into July:

The Toms River Little League Champs (Silver .256) bounced back from a disappointing May to a nice 18-7 June. They continue to hold a relatively strong hold on the division. This comes despite offensive struggles from Yogi Berra (0 wRC+), Chuck Knoblauch (22 wRC+), Willie McCovey (64 wRC+), and Socks Seybold (72 wRC+) over the month. However, importantly Larry Dierker finally returned to form, posting a 1.42 ERA for the month.

The New Jersey No Money (Gold .339 - F2P) acquired Darin Erstad to replace Roy Cullenbine as the starting left fielder, improving team defense noticeably. Another near .500 month at 13-14 is keeping the team within striking distance of the division, and in the hunt for the second wild card spot. DH JD Martinez won batter of the month, posting a line of .369, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 21 R.

The Las Vegas Pack Crackers (Bronze .353 - F2P Packs only) acquired Casey Mize via card pack, further stabilizing the starting rotation. The lineup still needs help, however. The team stopped the freefall from May, but still posted a sub-.500 record of 11-15 for June.

Trenton Minutemen are 3-12 in July and still failing very bad, only Warren Spahn is producing at 9-3, 3.13. We are now at 37-59 after snapping 8 game losing streak.

Denver Bears are at 63-35 and are in first place again. Miles Mikolas is 11-3, 3.97. Larry Dierker 14-6, 3.44. Randy Jones 10-5, 4.40 as well at Larry Jansen 8-5, 3.52 are doing well.
JD Martinez is batting .329 and it is not even the All star Break and he has 86 RBIs and 27 HR. . And the Bears have 3 All Stars (Blake Treinen, JD Martinez, and Eddie Collins)

The Hoboken Zephyrs are once again suffering compared to Pythagorean expectation. Currently sitting at 49-46 and in the middle of a 4-game losing streak. At a +78 run differential, Pythag record is 57-38. The difference is again their record in 1-run games, which currently stands at 11-24.

Frustrating times here, but saving up some points to try to pick up the offense in future seasons.

Sounds like you might have a similar problem to me: an unreliable bullpen

The Hoggs are 51-45 at the All Star Break, tied for the division lead with the Atlanta Scallywags (52-46), and 1/2 a game ahead of the Plymouth Rangers (50-45). Our Pythag and our actual is currently the same, though our last 3 losses can all be attributed to the bullpen blowing up.

We're 2nd in BA but only 9th in runs scored. This could be to do with out 11th-ranked OBP. We're only 8th in home runs. Our starting pitching is settling back to good (3rd overall atm - the Bob Feller experiment didn't last long; I sold him and instead bought Al Kaline to play the OF corners with Socks Seybold and Carl Furillo (Furillo and Seybold also share time at DH)). Our bullpen is 9th-best. I'm giving Dan Quisenberry an extended run, and while the AI is only pitching him every 4-6 days he's doing okay. I've considered asking that he throw more often but have decided against that for now.

This is true. Pen has blown 6 of 28 chances, though their ERA is 4th in the conference.

So far the Hippos actual record is 50-45
Their Pyt record is 57 38

-7 is a big swing

The second place team is at +3 Pyt record so if we each actually had those Pyt records then I would have a 12 1/2 game lead instead of a 2 1/2 game lead

When it rains, it pours.

First, I've never scored 20 runs in a game before.
Second, I haven't had a gold achievement in a very long time (can only remember 2 incl. beta).

Ron Santo not only scored 6 runs in a 5-5 performance, he also hit for the cycle. 3,550PP just from his bat. 480 from the rest of the team.

So tempting to splurge on packs...

Wow congrats Izz

See the other thread where 20k resulted in two silvers... Packs can be so hit or miss.

I guess only takes one pack to find the perfect un-pulled Williams though...

Thanks!

Last time I got a gold achievement I bought 3 packs and pulled a Ted Williams - the not very good rookie version. I also pulled 96OVR Ron Santo, though...

But yeah, I think I'll hold off and save for a bit. My bullpen needs upgrading!

The Hoggs followed up their thrashing of the Little Rock Tincaps with... another thrashing. 12-0 this time. Santo feasted again, hitting 3 homers (the first time I've had a player do that, too!). He scored another 4 runs and drove in 5. Dizzy Dean got the shutout. 690PP for that game.

I probably won't earn any more for the rest of the week!

Month in review.

Santo took home Hitter of the Month.
We won 16 of 27 games.
Our overall is 57-48, which is good enough for a 1 1/2 game lead in our division.
That 20-run win was enough to convince the Pythagorites that we're now a game below where we should be.
We're hitting .279 as a team, which is good enough for 2nd-best in our conference.
We have the most hits in our conference and the 4th-most extra base hits.
Adding Kaline to the OF mix has brought good things. Our defensive efficiency has risen to 4th-best, while our overall ZR is 2nd-best in the whole league (it was before Kaline, but our outfield corners were giving up a lot more hits).
Furillo has mashed 11 homers in 68 hits.
Our bullpen continues to struggle. Have just sent down Will Harris for something-like the 3rd time this season and called up Tom Burgmeier. Doolittle still has 8 days to wait before I can bring him back in.
Despite our pitching struggles, our BABIP is 3rd-best at .293. There's a lot of offense going on!

I also earned a gold pack from playing Challenge Mode. Never had that before either, so this is turning into a pretty good OOTP day!

The gold card was Lorenzo Cain. If I'd pulled him yesterday I might not have spent so much PP on Kaline! Both have similar defensive attributes, and while Cain has a better eye, Kaline hits the ball into gaps. I think Cain will go off to market

That Lorenzo Cain sold last night. So there I was, with 7009 PP burning a hole in my pocket, browsing the AH. And there before me I saw a Rick Reuschel (90OVR) with a BIN of 7000 PP.

After much thought - correction, very little thought - I bought him.

Larry Dierker has been moved to Avoid High Leverage/Long Relief. Reuschel has lost his first 2 starts for me

Check out the last 11 games (this week and last week) for my Vern Stephens in Orcin's P410 league.

Never had any card anywhere close to this hot before. And look at how awful the July stats were.

So maybe sometimes, it's worth sticking with cold players. (of course it's because I'm not spending any more money on 19 and don't have anything to replace him with)
