Should I do a historical save or create a fictional league?
I've gotten a bit tired with just doing the regular 2018 season mlb saves and was wondering if historical is actually fun for someone who doesn't have a wealth of knowledge of baseball history?
I had a ootp fictional league in ootp17 that was fun but tried to create a league in ootp19 recently and its crashed twice when I finish creating it so at the moment im a bit turned off. I am kinda leaning towards doing a fictional save with my Toronto bluejays either in 1994, 1995, or 2016; 1994 since to try and go for the three peat, 1995 since its after the lockout, and 2016 to try and go all the way with my jays and thats the year I became a fan of baseball, but I am worried that I'll just become bored and it won't be fun since its still gonna be the mlb, and I am also a bit hesitant to do a historical save since I like historical accuracy and when something in history is changed it bothers that thats not actually true and I know this is a game but I like to play with accuracy. These are just some of my thoughts and questions, thank you. |

I believe historical saves can be great fun and can enhance your knowledge of baseball history. I'm particularly fond of the random debut historical saves.
Having said that, my own personal obsession these days is my fictional baseball world (reports of which can be found here: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=289570 ). Given what you have said above about getting a bit frustrated when statistics veer off from historical accuracy, although there are ways to set up an historic save with OOTP that potentially maximizes getting results that conform to the real life historical stats, I think fictional is a great way to go. Just lets you start fresh with no pre-conceptions about how the players should behave/perform. I personally find it a bit more challenging too for the same reason (no hindsight to fall back on) and harder to game the system. I don't think you can go wrong really whatever you choose, though you might have to tweak the settings a bit to get the results that work best for you, but I highly encourage taking the fictional route if that appeals to you at all. |

I think both are great ... I started out playing only historical, but after I tried fictional 4 years ago I became addicted and right now I'm playing fictional exclusively.
There simply is no right or wrong ... you should give both options a real try and decide what suits you best. And of course, this might be totally different two or three years from now.

I do both. In fact, I have never played a modern day game, regardless of which version I've played (been playing since OOTP8). I've created a fictional 4 league promotion universe which I really like where I started at the bottom. The top 3 leagues work like a normal promotion league with one division for all teams, but my bottom feeder is set up as the current MLB, where the winner of the world series will get promoted one level. Then, I started an historical game in 1991 as the Manager only of the Montreal Expos. I find it more challenging to play that way and that pretty much eliminates any house rules I might need to impose on myself since the only decisions I'm making are day to day lineup decisions. I play out all my games in both universes. I found it's easier to get immersed that way instead of simming large chunks of games. |

Historical random debuts are my sweet spot. Since I started them, I haven't played any other way. Gotten bogged down lately, but I'll get back to it. See here:

Okay thanks everyone for the replies; I decided to set up a fictional game where I made 4 leagues that make up Canada and from that I put them all in a association playoffs, so its kinda like a super cup in European football where the winners of each league play for the Canadian cup. So far ive gone through one season I had the computer pick my team in the inaugural draft but was still able to win the league but lost in the second round of the Canadian cup!

Fictional is a a beautiful thing IMO for that exact reason. No preconceived notions at all. You are watching history made for the first time. It's my preferred way to go. |
