1906 MLB Playoffs

The Dodgers seemed to just work well as a team, with the two top players being Bernaldino Loma and Steve Leber.

Brewer's manager Micah Bruner retired this season and Dusty Pulkowski took his spot. Bruner was 580-555 in his managerial career with two playoff appearances, including one World Series championship.

1906 Free Agency

You'll never guess how Yago Pimentel's season went last year with the White Sox - he pitched well for the first month and a half, tore his meniscus, spent the next 4 months on the DL, and then returned and pitched well in the last month.

Lazalde is putting together a very strong career - one that could end up either in the Hall of Fame or fall just short.

Bobby Sauder was this year's NL Division Series MVP with the Dodgers and is an average LF.

I had been checking throughout the year on Deshawn Wetherspoon but must have missed the big news - he signed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on July 1st, 1906 and is currently on their Low-A team. I was honestly wondering if there was a glitch with him and the July 1st signing keeps making me wonder that. Perhaps there was some confusion that he was an international free agent, even though he is American and there are no international free agents. The July 1 signing may also be a coincidence.

1906 Unsigned Draftees

Tulane was 6 players short of a full team, not sure what the plan was next year - lots of tired and injured players, I suppose.

1906 Where Are They Now?

Top Prospects:
Nate Verity - The number one prospect in 1901 has had an average career with the Devil Rays. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1902, led the league in HR in 1904 with 8, and won the Silver Slugger for LF in 1905.

Career MLB Stats: 3457 PA, .337 wOBA, 122 wRC+, -29.3 ZR

Eleneki Gumlaw - The top pitching prospect in 1901 has spent most of his time with the Orioles but signed with the Cardinals last year and the Expos this year. He is a middle reliever as that changeup never got to its potential.

Career MLB Stats: 175 G, 84 BB, 101 K, 1.9 WAR

Draftees:
Jonathan Burleson - The number one draft prospect in 1901 had his potential drop to the basement in 1903. He spent a little bit of time in the Majors with the Orioles but has otherwise been minor league filler material.

Career MLB Stats: 106 PA, .286 wOBA, 83 wRC+, -2.4 ZR

Joe Herberholz - The top high schooler in the 1901 draft is currently a reliever with the Reds. His ceiling also dropped in 1903 as he was never able to master the curveball and slider.

Career MLB Stats: 3 G, 0 BB, 2 K, 0.1 WAR

Joe Ramage - The number one pick in the draft in 1901 failed to sign and returned to the draft next year, only to be drafted by the Giants again. He did sign the second time. He is one of the top pitchers in the league with 11 shutouts under his belt in 3 years.

Career MLB Stats: 105 G, 186 BB, 311 K, 13.0 WAR

Award Winners:
Nico Verano - He was an All-Star and the Rookie of the Year in 1901. He had a couple of solid seasons following in 1902 and 1903 but has spent 1904 through 1906 traveling between the Major and Minor Leagues.

Career MLB Stats: 2139 PA, .317 wOBA, 105 wRC+, 14.8 ZR

Alfredo Cruz - The NL Rookie of the Year has fared slightly better - maintaining above average stats, along with two Gold Glove awards at 2B.

Career MLB Stats: 3187 PA, .307 wOBA, 100 wRC+, 78.3 ZR

Other:
Nate Clements - The top FA in the 1901 offseason just recently became a free agent again and signed with the Athletics. He was the league's premier power hitter in 1901-1903 and will be looking to make a Hall of Fame case with his final few years before retirement.

Career MLB Stats: 4720, .348 wOBA, 124 wRC+, 169.1 ZR

1906 FA Summary

Yago Pimentel signed with the Astros for 2 years and a huge sum of over 20 million per year. I don't know what they were thinking as he is more likely to have a career-ending injury than to win any awards.

Lazalde signed with the Blue Jays in a deal that will take him to his age 36 or 37 season.

Sauder went all the way across the country to sign with the Orioles after being with the Dodgers for 7 years.

Dan McKee Introduces Leg Guards

Name: DanMckee.PNG
Views: 227
Size: 54.9 KB

I received an email that Dan McKee, the 1905 World Series MVP, the 1903 Gold Glove C, the 2-time All-Star, had invented catcher's leg guards. "Strapped to the knee and calf, it is of a two-piece construction, with a knee guard made of molded leather and the leg piece padded with reeds."

At the same time, possibly coincidentally, McKee's defensive rating improved from 65 to 70. I wonder if there is something to this that the game will purposefully hold down some ratings in the early 1900s.

1907 Top 100 Prospects

Name: LesterBarlow.PNG
Views: 164

The top prospect is the somewhat unfamiliar Lester Barlow. He came out of the Henley Hornets, an Oregon High School and was drafted 2nd overall in 1904. He will be breaking camp with the Cardinals this year after only reaching as high as A+ in the minor leagues.

Name: JackGilkeyIowa.PNG

The top pitching prospect is Jack Gilkey - 2-time NCAA Pitcher of the Year, who failed to sign with the Orioles in 1905 but did sign with the Cubs in 1906. He is currently playing for their AAA team.

Name: ChrisSpinner1907.PNG
Views: 181

This year marks the 4th top 100 list on which Chris Spinner has appeared. He was drafted out of high school in 1903 and been ranked as number 9, 7, 4, and 9 prospect but is only now getting to AA.

This is the third no-hitter of Begley's career: Once in college, once in the South Atlantic League, and now in the Midwest League. He still has little to no potential and has only barely sniffed AA, but three no-hitters is memorable, no matter what level.

1907 Draft Top 100

The top 6 players in the draft are all high school hitters. The way I have been determining the top draft players is ranking by talent level - I imagine that the game uses some mixture of talent and career value (which takes into account the likelihood of success).

Name: RJTaylor.PNG
Views: 143
Size: 35.1 KBR.J. Taylor is the top prospect - he has won the MVP twice in the Florida High School League.

Name: BobbyCattouse.PNG
Views: 161
Size: 38.8 KBThe top college player is Bobby Cattouse from Fresno State. He is basically a DH who has not hit very well in college but has a ton of potential.

Name: AndyGoodell.PNG
Views: 119
Size: 40.7 KBThe top pitcher is Andy Goodell from Virgina.
