Specialist pitchers

Quick feedback request to the larger audience...

If you utilize specialists (example Doolittle vs LHBs, Medina vs LHBs, ...), how many innings do you see them pitch/year? Is this number lower than expected? I have seen some with just 10-15 innings/year.

So I checked on some real MLB specialist pitchers and noticed that they are closer to 30-40 innings. Example: Marc Rzepczynski.

It could be the result of my settings or all the high stamina starters, hence fewer innings for the bullpen.

I just wish I could "force" them out a little bit more often to face certain pitchers instead of watching my middle relief guys give up hits again and again.

Try setting as Setup for primary role and Specialist for secondary role. Not saying that will give you what you want but worth a shot.

I am afraid this may send them out against the wrong folks.
I had them in other roles before but Doolittle kept giving up HRs against RHBs.

I don't believe the setup (primary)+specialist secondary is available for Right Handed specialists. Last I checked, the options only showed "lefty specialist" as the second option.

One problem is you can't do Right Handed Specialist as a secondary role, for some reason.

You can get more innings by doing the opposite and give them a secondary role. Also, you could use 4-6 specialists with the high L/R match up setting if you want to go all Dave Roberts on people.

I would suggest doing it the other way around - specialist first, and then middle/long/setup/etc... second. That way, they'll end up being the first pick when you need a specialist, and essentially the last pick when you need something else. Leaving a guy as ONLY a specialist it's very likely that they will end up with very few innings over the season.

Also note with a specialist, appearances are more important than innings. Most games their inning count should be 0.0, 0.1 or 0.2.

Matt, isn’t that going to result in my specialist getting used against the wrong batters?

I will continue to try to get them to 30-40 innings (in real life, RZep was almost exclusively used for 0.1 inning and then pulled). However, he pitched 2x as many innings as I can produce in PT.

For example, I have Doolittle all ready to go (full stamina) but he sits in the pen day after day despite the team facing LHBs.

Just wishing there was an option to make him earn his salary :-)

I have a RH specialist and a LH specialist, the RH specialist has 34.2, 36.1 and 17.1 so far this season in IP over the last 2 years and change. 62 games and 61 games and now 27 games so far this year. The LH specialist has 54, 51, and so far 12 games this year (although he started on the reserve roster this year b/c i tried a different pitcher there first) with 25.1, 23, and 5.1 so far.

You could try changing your strategy settings to favor R/L matchups.

thank you CrazyWR for your stats.

Looks like your righty specialist is pretty consistent and getting to numbers that match some of the real life specialists.

Is your R/L matchup strategy maxed? How many relievers are you using?
Using Stoppers or Closers?

When I get home tonight I'll look at it my strategy settings, I think it is close to default for L/R matchups b/c finding enough lefties to put in my pen as a F2P team has been a challenge. For my pen though, I have a closer/stopper/setup/MR/LR with the 2 specialists. I'll screenshot it tonight for you. All my pen guys have a pitch count limit of 25 except the long guy and the specialists have a secondary role as MR, but as you can tell, they dont typically pitch full innings based on game count vs IP.

So, speaking of this topic and Doolittle in particular, dude has had 3 straight months of absolutely perfect pitching in Perfect League...against 8 batters. LOL.

I'm afraid to change up his settings for fear he'll get blown up again, but I can't justify his roster spot at this workload. He's absolutely the #1 pitcher in the game vs. LH (120 STU, 70 MOV, 88 CON), but he's not great vs. RH (104/59/83) because his MOV is garbage...like there's nearly 200 pitchers with better MOV vs. RH. Look at my L/R splits below...night and day.

Anyway, time to loosen the leash and give him a non-LH Specialist role, but with maybe at 15-20 pitch limit to keep him from going too long.
