New Or Used - how to tell the difference

Hello gang,

Just curious if there is any way to tell if the card you are buying in an auction is someone's discarded card with stats and seasons attached to it already or if it is a brand new one.

I'd say 90% of cards I have bought are clean but there is that 10% or so that come with baggage.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, you have to buy it to find out.

I actually like baggage. I like seeing how other people did with the card and seeing if I can do better or the stats I am getting are what is expected.

However, I do like it hidden from view on AH. Think of a card that has a hot streak and someone is trying to gouge the market because of the stats knowing that the sim doesn't take that into account. I don't think that is fair to people who may just be unlucky or using the wrong strat for a card and not getting full value.

Maybe a neutral ground could be a number that tells how many previous owners? Or how many previous seasons played?

Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of only showing New or Used. A simple CarFax of sorts... I'm like you BAMFBreakers in that I don't need or want to see the miles he has on him. Just whether they have ever played a game before or not.

Did anyone ever confirm if players on the AH carry over position ratings gained on other teams?

Yes. An 85 Eddie Collins I bought had already been trained to 64 at SS.

Yes, definitely. I bought SS Aparicio and was surprised and happy to find him fully trained at 2B and 3B as well. He's got some amazing defense at all three.

Noob question. How can you tell if there has been a ratings improvement?

When I look at the ratings screen I see current/potential, but only one number.

For instance, I have a Luis Aparicio with a few years under his belt that has position ratings of 2B 90, 3B 61 & SS 110. What would his base stats be to see what improvement he's made?

Not trying to hijack the thread, just curious.

The base stats (infield range error arm for example) stay the same and the player comes with a position rating already (so for him, 110SS in this case), and you have essentially improved his ratings at 2B and 3B by playing him in those positions.

I guess you can only tell if there has been a ratings improvement by knowing the default ratings.

So can you see this while they're on the AH or is it just a nice surprise after they hit your roster?

I've probably looked at 300 shortstops (the most cross-trained position it seems) and have yet to see one on the AH with additional positions than the base. (or every single card for player x has been trained up identically, which is highly unlikely).

I recall one of the devs saying you can only see the additional training once they hit your roster, as currently they grab ratings for cards listed on AH from the default card list on their server, rather than from individual accounts (or something like that).

I am still trying to figure out what difference it makes. If you could suddenly acquire a perfect Pedro would you care if it was new or used?

I wouldn't care, but new from a pack is the only way I will get one.

Pedro wouldn't matter at all to me. But getting a Machado already maxed out on all the other positions, or ARod at 1st, Lindor or Betts at 2nd....I would imagine those would carry fairly nice premiums over the base cards.

As far as a new or used in general though, I'm sure some people think some cards are cursed and destined to suck and they don't want that bad juju.

I can never understand those beliefs personally, but from reading threads on here, I definitely get that feeling from a few people.

I might be selling my 95 Arod soon, but unfortunately I don't get to command an extra premium for him even though he has a complete 103 1B rating, almost half his 92 2B rating, and close to complete 84 at 3B.

Oh man, and I'm wondering what my fully trained 2B/LF/RF Mookie would command. Probably could buy a fresh Mookie and have a bunch left over.
