I don't understand the bronze-silver-gold-diamond thing
For example, I have a 2001 Ichiro card. He won Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, was worth 6 WAR and had 56 SB and more base hits than anyone in 70 years... but he's not even a silver card?

Historical cards overall ratings are downgraded intentionally to make them more available to people pricewise by the devs. Ichiro is one of the top top bronze cards though and some people are keeping him even over gold cards. Look past the overall ratings

Ichiro is also a great example of extreme ratings. There are some things he basically doesn't do at all, and that helps depress his ratings. But what he does do, he does extremely well. It just so happens that the combination of things he does extremely well are desirable to many and not so common to find on other cards.
Luis Aparicio is another such example, and there are others who fall into this category. Low rated specialists can last a long time on a team, depending on the needs and the alternatives. |

My 69 overall Ichiro is still starting in my outfield to this day in the Gold.271 league. Recently sold an 85 overall Bobby Abreu that I pulled because I'd rather have Ichiro starting.
It all comes down to the variability of the OOTP engine. The same Ichiro that's hitting .340+ (last I checked) in my current Gold league against steady 85-100 overall pitchers also hit .270 and got benched when I was in Bronze league a couple weeks ago against lesser competition. |

I am having a hard time replacing Ichiro on any of my teams. Great defense, speed and hitting. Just not sure if the 2001 or 2004 version is better.
But to your point, when I try to upgrade a position, the gold or diamond players are not always an upgrade over my silver or bronze player or at times I like tend to buy gold player over a diamond. Really depends at what type of talents you are looking for to build your team.

I feel like 2001 is better as though he has slightly lower contact, his Avoid K and Gap is better, and he is slightly better defensively.
