House Rules
What are your house rules? I am curious, as I have taken on the Tigers and just find myself frustrated after starting 2019 off 0-4 when I had what I believe was a great offseason. Maybe I traded too much, set my own expectations too high?
Anyway, what are your house rules for trades, rookies on your ML team, free agent signings? Anything specific you follow?

When I make trades or sign players and add them to my roster I do not play them the same day. I wait for the next calendar day. Travel time.
I wont trade for a guy that I know a computer team just signed weeks earlier. I wont trade a guy I signed in the offseason until halfway through the next year, even if its a one-year deal. I wont trade for a guy that I just traded away within the same season. |

With the exception of twice yearly housekeeping, no more than 3 offers or roster moves per day.

My 2 main house rules are mainly about extensions:
1) For players who are arbitration-eligible, I only offer an extension if they propose it when I go to avoid arbitration. If they want to go year-by-year, I’ll go year-by-year. 2) for players in contract years, I will only offer an extension during the season if they ask me for one in an email. This email has to be sent during the season. Once the offseason hits, no offers to people hitting free agency until free agency begins. |

I don't ever sign players in mid season and I always draft pitchers.

If I see an amazing player (usually its opposing team) I will reduce his injury rating so I can see how his career turns out. Once in a while I will see if I can help him remain a starter as the AI loves to platoon some of the great ones I have noticed. Reality break knowing they wouldn't be starting a player 120 games and only playing 130 to 140 games as anyone would be playing them guys minimally 150 to 155 games a year and starting ALL of them

I don't do trades if they're really stupid for the AI team.

Does anyone limit the number of new players (via trade or FA) they bring to their team over a single offseason? What about number of rookies you allow to start the season with the ML club?

My biggest house rule is not to spend the most money. Like to be no more than slightly above average on payroll. If I exceed 75% of the max I start cutting back.

I play zero house rules...I challenge Markus to create an AI which can hold it's own with a human opponent.

this is actually a good argument for why we should have the luxury tax reflected in the financial system. Here's hoping for version 20.

Just to get a feel for "house rules" that have been refined over time, you might have a look at some of the longer term online leagues (if not play in one). They usually have a string of rules that have been refined and/or adopted over time, based on the experience and feedback of many GM's. And often, there are a handful that seem pretty much universal to most leagues. And yes, some different ones too.
Of course your own personal style can certainly be added and reflected, but might be worth a look. Usually there is a link to rules posted when recruiting talented GM's. Last edited by Winnipeg59; 12-12-2018 at 07:28 AM. |

If you want a strong AI opponent, you need to allow it to field a 28 man roster, while making sure they carry an extra relief pitcher or two. If you don't they will constantly wear down their bullpen.
I also place a salary cap on my team, while making sure the AI teams (esp. the big market teams) have enough financial flexibility to keep them competitive. |

This section of the forum has a first thread to post your info.
BUT you might want to just scan the posts of leagues looking for new GM's and check out some of the rules to see if they fit your game? And, like I mentioned, that will also give you a feel for some of the "house rules" used that you could also implement in your solo game(s). Good Luck! http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...lay.php?f=3938 |

I've managed several teams in my league and I won't trade for a guy I've had on a former team unless he's offered by the AI. I will sign them as free agents, however.
Being on my 5th team now, it's getting tough as I've had most of the studs at some point and they're off limits.

1) I don't fleece the AI in a trade.
2) I don't sign and trade anyone (I'd wait until at least June). 3) I try not to completely makeover my roster in a short amount of time. 4) Going along with that, I prefer to promote from the minors rather than sign a bunch of good relievers to 1-year deals, even though that's by far the easiest/sneakiest way to have a great bullpen every year (I hope they fix reliever contracts for 2020). 5) As soon as my owner starts telling me to re-sign a 35-year-old slugger to an extension, I turn off "owner goals" and pretend that he died, leaving the team to me! |
