The plan to name leagues after famous players (i.e. Babe Ruth League) had to be scrapped according to Markus. I have no idea why or what the new plan is. Until then, we get to pretend we belong to sororities.

These league names are pretty silly for baseball Leagues.

How about something like leagues named and dedicated to the memory of deceased players and people that dedicated their lives to baseball.

example...

Babe Ruth Memorial league

Jackie Robinson Memorial League

Mel Allen Memorial League

Peter Ueberroth Memorial League ....and etc.

Can You copyright your last name?
A person's name cannot be protected under copyright law. Copyright law protects original works of authorship, such as paintings, books, screenplays and musical compositions. Copyright protection does not extend to names, slogans, short phrases or logos.

This is what I thought..… So it can't be a copyright infringement... After all there is a "Babe Ruth League" in youth baseball.. I played in it..

...and "Babe Ruth League" can be copyrighted. It's not just a player name. Copyright law is a ^^^ &&&&ed nightmare to navigate. Also, copyright can protect slogans under certain circumstances.

In the US, ownership and licensing of names is usually covered by 'publicity rights', and the laws around that are generally more similar to trademark law than copyright law (and also differ state to state). It looks like the rights to 'Babe Ruth' are still owned by his descendants, but this company manages the licensing issues for them: http://www.luminarygroup.com/. (for the Babe Ruth league, they only changed their name to that after being granted permission to do so by his widow).

Most likely it was scrapped because there are so many leagues being generated.
