Problems "turning into coach."

I am playing historical seasons. I wanted to turn Ty Cobb, listed in the retired players, into a coach. I am in admin mode, right-click "turn into coach" and am told he is now listed in available personnel. I go into the available personnel, he is not there. I search for him, he shows up and the history says "started coaching career." Yet, he is not listed as available for hire. A right-click gives me no options, and neither does the "actions" tab. I go and try the exact same thing for Shoeless Joe Jackson, and it works. He is now my hitting coach. I have tried other players but no such luck. How did one of these work and not the others?

Are you clicking on his retired player profile or his coaching profile? Do a search for him in the search bar at the top of the screen and when the results come back, you will see two sections on the screen, one for players and one for coaches. You have to use the coach record to hire him as a coach.

Yeah. Cobb doesn't appear as an available personnel on this. Maybe because he is a jerk. But actually I wonder if somehow their skills or the available positions you have factor into it.

I know in older versions, the default coaching position was Bench Coach

This is where they end up in 19. You either have to hire them into a position to get them to change preferences, or you can edit it in commissioner mode to the kind of coach or manager you want them to be.
