Please explain player ratings system!!

Can you please explain player ratings! I find it very hard to believe H Bader 74...B Nimmo 84 can be rated higher than Al Simmons .I have followed baseball over 60 years and cant imagine this...another example Harry Byrd 80 ..over Catfish Hunter 71 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!..Thanks

I just ignore the overall ratings and look at the actual scouting report of the player because some guys with high overall ratings aren't actually that good in the game...

As previously stated you have to forget the OVR and do a little homework.I have golds that IMHO far out weigh most diamonds at their position. That is true right down the rating system to some irons being better than bronze.

Also remember that, I assume, the ratings system takes everything into account. A well rounded but unspectacular player may rate higher than a superstar who is more one dimensional.

I feel that with pitching you should ignore the overall ratings. I just got kershaw out of my deck at 99 overall. But my best pitcher, for 2 weeks now, has been Mark Fidrych 74 overall.

My pitching staff performed amazing, under 3.5 era team average, without Kershaw and Bauer.

My favorite ratings issue is with Ichiro.....69 overall?

What exactly is the OVR based on? Is it calculated from the individual ratings or just a made up number like the individual ratings?

Gaylord Perry has 6 pitches which include a forkball and screwball which may have something to do with it. I used to have him and he didnt do very good for me though.

I remember him well. I seen him numerous times when he came to the Rangers in his twilight. He had another pitch too that is not listed here.

Isn't number of pitches something OOTP takes into consideration when calculating stuff?

Just like the overall numerical or star rating in the standard OOTP, the card values at times appear to be hilariously off.

Can ratings change during the course of a season? An older player gets worse or a young player gets better?

The Ratings listed on the Player Cards are complete garbage. I mean absolutely ridiculous, the ratings don't mean anything and have no bearing on how well the player will perform.

For example - I had Aaron Nola and Blake Snell both with ratings of 92. They started the season off with a 20+ and 13+ ERA respectively. They improved slightly over the course of the season, but their ERA's never dropped below 5+. I also have Madison Bumgarner and Zack Wheeler who can't get below 4+. None of my pitchers have an ERA below 2, and the vast majority of my pitchers cant get below 3+. In Summary, I have had multiple pitchers with ratings 85 - 95 that were so awful, I benched them, an then eventually sold them.

In one game I had 4 Relievers come in the game and each of them gave up 5 runs in 4 different innings, resulting in 20 runs! These were all players rated above 65.

I also have Aaron Judge (94) and Ichiro (70) that are doing nothing. BA's around .230

How am I supposed to manage a team when the ratings mean nothing and the players perform like they belong in Triple A?

Managing in essence means exactly compensating for adverse developments like you describe them. You don't need a *manager* to nod approvingly from the dugout to a team that stomps everybody and wins 125 games. That one a donkey could do.

For MLB live cards it's the normal OOTP player evaluation algorithm. For historical cards it's a bit different (otherwise we'd have far too many golds & diamonds), plus there are manual edits. So, It's good to do some homework and compare individual ratings.

I'm having a hard time with this..Users can buy all the gold and diamond cards as they want..makes no sense not to rate historical players correctly based on that reason IMO...Its like you want the Current players to be the ones predominately used because of the MLB license.

Matter of fact, the poor historical rating model and the paying players having a huge advantage..It wont be long until I go back to my old way of playing OOTP,which is just fine with me.

Shame tho because the concept is awesome but money, greed, and just dumb luck ruins the strategic part of the game the regular OOTP offers. IMO.

It's funny because the idea with the lower overall ratings of a handful of historical players is exactly the opposite of what you seem to think it is.

It's born out of a love for the historical guys and a desire on our part to see plenty of them in PT, not just to have it dominated by current guys at the lower levels and only have the historical guys at the highest levels, where their cards might not be seen nearly as often.

This way sets more historical guys into play at the lower levels, rather than just as high value cards that people will rarely see (there are still plenty of those for historical players as well). Plus, since the historical guys are "underrated" in some cases compared to current players (only per overall, which isn't really even a rating at all but intentionally just a very rough guide), it spotlights some lesser known historical players and makes their cards more interesting and valuable to the community than current players at the same overall level.

Thus, those historical guys are far more likely to be used and bought than similarly ranked current guys and provides an opportunity for people find out about to take a look at the careers of some historical guys they might not otherwise have known.

So far from some sort of byzantine conspiracy in favor of current players and against historical guys, it's literally the exact opposite.

The only historical rating that really grated me that I have seen is for Clemente's arm. When I looked at his rating on the AH I thought "these guys never seen the great Roberto Clemente throw somebody out at 3rd or home from the right field corner."

The so called great arms of today mostly pale in comparison to my memories. Although there are a few really great arms out there today.

That's just generated by the game's algorithm based off his stats as of now. We'll edit it manually to better reflect how good it actually was
