I'm glad I checked and found where you guys had been talking about this Sisco thing. It's old news and I would not have wanted to start a new thread, but I thought I had seen the story appear someplace here.

The reason it occurred to me to bring this up again is because I ran across an article at Seamheads.com which I thought did a great job of defending Sisco and making the Twins look a bit foolish. After just a few such articles, I find myself becoming an Andrew Martin fan.

This for example. Hits it right on the head:

Why is it a violation of the unwritten rules that Sisco tried to get on base during a late, out of hand game, but the Twins were in the right by shifting their fielders in an effort to get him out more easily? There is always concern in major league sports that teams are putting out maximum effort (see history of gambling, tanking, etc…). If anything, MLB should crack down on such talk that suggests that a player or team should effectively stand down because they happen to be losing by a wider margin.

The way I see this is that he's an employee of a company, that company has a dress code and as an employee he should follow it.

It's no different than if the job where you worked had a dress code that you were expected to follow.

I respect the opinion.

I subscribe to the belief that just because you are allowed to do something doesn't mean you should. Out of all the things it takes to be a pro, am I really going to give a bunch of attention to how someone wears a hat? There is a reason the O's are letting kids in the park free. Cause they see MLB is losing the fans of tomorrow. And one of the factors is the old farts discouraging personality in the game. An unnecessary dress code is not the horse I'm going to hitch my wagon to.

Baseball will be fine, but I think you have hit on something: there should be some move to grow the fan-base.

For example, there should be at least some private-public partnerships with MLB teams to help a couple of the surrounding municipal Park & Rec departments with building out/renovating some little-league fields and providing some basic infrastructure. By its nature, it’s a rather “cheap” sport to set-up and support. It would cost “pennies” compared to the benefits: Good PR, good Political points, and mainly for MLB, helping foster a new generation’s interest in the sport.

MLB started this years ago w/ the "MLB urban initiative" (or whatever it's called). I've seen this play out first hand in the Dallas / Fort Worth area.

MLB needs to get more involved w/ Little League because travel baseball is slowly killing local recreation leagues.

Yea, I checked on this and there is little information...doesn't seem as comprehensive or direct as I suggested. I really couldn't find much information.

To your point, I completely agree. That is what I had in-mind. Some sort of direct support-private/public partnerships within their host cities and metro areas, to help construct truly decent facilities and initial infrastructure to support local rec leagues, through to High School.

I was watching this game and was throughly amused by these 2 clowns going off on this. Stupid and petty, but Braves announcers have always been idiots so glad to see the tradition continues. How rich that that moron Carey, who owes his career to nepotism as he has no talent, should tell someone to "lighten up" about this. I doubt he has any idea how Vin Scully feels about this but nice of him to volunteer the information.

I disagree, I think MLB needs to figure out how to increase college scholarships and scholarship money. I could be wrong but my impression is that football and basketball (possibly hockey?) has a higher scholarship per roster spot.

"NCAA Division I baseball recruits only the top players and it is not uncommon for players to be recruited by big league teams before they enter college. Typically, coaches can divide their scholarships into awards for 30 players. Out of the 298 DI baseball programs, each school is allowed to offer a maximum of 11.7 scholarships per team. Roughly 242 colleges are NCAA DII programs and allow 9 full tuition scholarships. Partial tuition is common in DII which gives coaches flexibility in creating their roster. DIII baseball has the most schools participating, with 408 programs. However, DIII programs are prohibited from offering scholarships as a recruiting incentive. Rather, there are general athletic grants and academic scholarships that are offered in order to recruit talent to the campus "

While the focus on youth baseball and urban baseball is good youth involvement does not always become professional players, see USA soccer.
I think the more important attraction for high school level talent is the full ride scholarship. If the NCAA does not provide them I think baseball should spend the money to get it to happen. This may mean MLB bankrolls NCAA softball so that baseball can offer scholarships and comply with title 9. A functional solution to funnel more athletes through college as baseball players, I think, will make baseball more attractive to high school students.

Also, Ron Darling, who I (disclaimer) hold in the highest esteem as part of the Mets' broadcast crew, is himself of pretty much all the races there are. He probably knows offensive terms better than a white guy from Philly that poses with Marx' assembled works on Twitter.

I would not let him steal with a 9-run lead for the plain reason that it is just another play he could get hurt on. Why push it when you are up by nine and the Show is on? Won't come back from a hammy this month…

I don't know. Maybe a case of a dragging game, being stuck with bland Brian Anderson, and not being able to reminisce the 80s with Keith Hernandez.

I thought it was one of those unfortunate unintended bad timing issues. It certainly wasn't one of those racist dog whistles. In fact, if Darling had taken a moment to keep himself from saying "chink" because of Tanaka, wouldn't that mean he thought of Asians that way? Chink in the armor is an expression w/zero intent to be racist. If the saying has a racist background, it has long since been forgotten.

"Chink" as a slur didn't start til 4 centuries later.

But as I said in the Wahoo thread, if it offends, just apologize & try not to use it again publicly like that. I think Darling did the right thing. If anyone wanted to make a big deal out of it later, then they are the ones with the problem.

My point of outrage is that it is *entirely obvious* which meaning was intended with Darling's words. Only people deliberately out to harm people's careers - and there are plenty - would think of anything else. And *Darling*. Oh dear.
