The Oggy thing
How does one win 4 Triple Crowns (batting) in 3 seasons?
How does one sweep the finals 8 times in 3 seasons? How is one Manager of the year 14 times in 3 seasons? How does one win only 6 championships when you've swept 8 times in 3 seasons? How does one win the Home Run title 14 times in only three seasons? How does one lead the league in pitching wins 16 times in 3 seasons? How does one reach the finals 17 times in 3 seasons? Fantastic score 16 times? 7 pitchers of the year? 13 MVP's? 12 batting champions? Just asking because I'd like a taste of that math to apply to my bank account!

The answer, as you know, is CHEATING! Too bad this is allowed to go on, and too bad that many people apparently consider it a big joke.

I don't consider cheating a joke, and I would hope that the OOTP boys will soon enough find a way to prevent such cheating. I am fiercely anti-cheating. Cheaters are disgusting, lying, betraying fraudsters.
However… if someone is so BAD at cheating that they win the World Series 12 times in six seasons (or whatever), you're in the Chuck Norris territory of absurdity already. What should we do instead? Marvel in awe at Oggy's achievements?

I'll admit, I've found the Oggy-related banter around here in the past completely hilarious and enjoyable.
But I certainly understand your concern and frustration about this sort of thing Orcin. I myself am just not very much compelled by the more competitive aspects of this hobby and have never once played in Challenge Mode. But I can see where if it feels like it is being taken advantage of wildly and you enjoy the challenge of matching your skills against other players this could render the whole thing rather meaningless. At this point though I find myself thinking two things about Oggy: 1) There is a mental/emotional imbalance at play here that would compel someone to behave this way with no tangible reward other than (false) bragging rights, and that is, in fact, not funny, even though the, I think mostly healthy, reaction here has been quite amusing, or.... 2) Someone is very deliberately making a point, pretty much the same point you are making Orcin, about the validity of Challenge Mode results, but in a far less direct, sneakier way. If that is true, I somewhat respect that but I think it would be best if they came forward and fessed up now. |

what's oggy? (rhetorical, glad i don't know)
he's not even cheating smartly... ffs, the math doesn't add up on some of that stuff. i thought challenge mode results were just based on first season? regardless, it's not cheating to know how to abuse a game and consistently win 130+ games a year. many of the arguments above could be directed at that from of play, and it'd be wrong. hex-editing or the like is plain wrong. no debate needed. now, on your own time, i find it fun, lol. after i would win a game, past tense as i don't buy those types of games anymore and fairly limited and useless in regard to this type of baseball sim that includes an editor, i'd always create a table of addresses to monkey around with. it's fun to stampede through a game the 2nd time, lol. |

Dude, people are just making jokes just for fun. Obviously everyone considers cheating a problem. The OOTP team knows about this and is addressing it, so where's the harm in a little forum banter? Calm down.

I am perfectly calm, but I still think it should be taken seriously.

Then again, I understand that calculations in Perfect Team f.e. will happen server-side, which makes it infinitely harder to cheat the system as has happened here. If calculations happen on your machine, you just have to hit the right buttons to make the game do X. Which shows that I have no clue of computers in general, because otherwise the Raccoons would not be in their 33rd straight season of being wholly disregardable. ![]()

Here's what I mean by taking it seriously...
Oggy's profile was wiped in early September after I reported it the first time. OOTP was not monitoring the leaderboards or they would have seen it as easily as I did. Immediately after the reset, Oggy returned and pulled the same stunt. I waited for nearly three weeks without reporting it. No action was taken by OOTP until this new thread was posted. In order to keep the Challenge Mode leaderboards clean, someone needs to monitor it every day (at least) and take appropriate action to clear out the obvious cheaters. Ignoring the problem is not taking it seriously. It would easy to find volunteers to monitor the leaderboards and report suspected cheating, so it would not take resources away from development. It would also be easy to develop a program to scan the leaderboards for suspicious results and flag those accounts for someone to check. Just a little effort would go a long way, and I see no evidence of effort in this case. |

videos games are far from serious. competition or a leaderboard should have integrity too. i think it's a bit much to ask for daily monitoring for such small potatoes. a spot-check for overt nonsense is more than enough.
no matter what you do, someone will do something that others 'feel' is wrong, so it's difficult to be too strict about this stuff. the last sports console game i bought was a tiger woods golf game for ps3 in 2010ish. some monkey bought or borrowed a bunch of ps3's and was running up the leaderboards by playing as 4 people and losing to himself, lol. but, the real joke is that everyone plays with controllers that reduces senstivity of the analog stick. so who is cheating? or isn't? |
