1979 Final - Cont'd Playoffs
Again this year the sim playoffs were markedly different than IRL 1979. It got the last gasp of the Big Red Machine correct (even the 0-3 in the NLCS), but alas, no "We Are Family" Pirates team.

04/11/1980 - Cubs Score Late to Upend Mets, 8-7
The Chicago Cubs overcame a good performance by New York left fielder Steve Henderson to knock off New York, 8-7, at Shea Stadium. Henderson went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. With the win, Chicago goes to 1-1.
Dave Kingman, who is the 1979 Most Valuable Player Award winner, chipped in for Chicago with a 2-run homer in the top of the first off LHP Kevin Kobel. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 runs batted in. "It wasn't a pretty victory," said Kingman, "but we got it done." 04/20/1980 - Youngblood Helps Mets Run Win Streak to 4, Kong Homers Twice in Vain
New York right fielder Joel Youngblood made his presence felt in the 10-4 Mets triumph over the Chicago Cubs. Youngblood was 2 for 2 with a home run and 3 walks. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Pat Zachry earned the win to go to 2-1. He allowed 4 earned runs on 8 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. New York, at 7-2, is off to a blistering start.
The Mets got a big at-bat from first baseman Mike Jorgensen. For the game, Jorgensen went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk, while adding 4 RBI. In the top of the third, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 2nd double of the season gave New York a 5-2 lead. 04/23/1980 - Cubs Continue Skid Thanks to Reitz, Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs, 9-5, at Wrigley Field. The win was largely due to the efforts of third baseman Ken Reitz, who captured player of the game honors. He went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 4. The Cubs, now 1-10, continue their poor start.
Reitz had a key at-bat for St. Louis early in the game. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a 2-run double. It was his 1st double of the season and gave St. Louis an early 2-0 lead. 04/25/1980 - Cubs Subdue Pittsburgh, 5-3
The Chicago Cubs bested the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5-3, with first baseman Dave Kingman getting the main credit. On the day, Kingman went 1-2 with a home run off LHP John Candelaria and 3 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Cubs. The winner was Dennis Lamp, who threw 114 pitches over 8 innings. The right-hander was charged with 3 runs on 7 hits. Bruce Sutter locked down his 2nd save.
Mike Vail went 1-4 with a walk for Chicago. The 28-year old right fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 3-3 tie with a run-scoring walk off Enrique Romo. It was his 3rd walk of the season. "I really like what we did out there today," Kingman said after the game. Chicago is still hoping to get on a roll. The win is just their 2nd in 12 games. 04/26/1980 - Pirates Edge Past Cubs, 4-3
Wrigley Field was the site of an exciting ballgame between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs.
The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a win at Wrigley Field, knocking off the Chicago Cubs, 4-3. Starting pitcher Bert Blyleven, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. The win was Jim Bibby's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Willie Hernandez took the loss for Chicago. John Milner, who is tied for 8th in the NL in home runs with 3, chipped in for Pittsburgh with a solo home run in the top of the 14th. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 run batted in. "I'm just happy to help the team win," Blyleven told the Pittsburgh Gazette. Pittsburgh, now 10-5, has played well in the early going. 04/27/1980 - Pirates Top Cubs Behind Robinson, 5-3 Despite Kingman Homer
The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, in NL action at Wrigley Field. The player of the game was Pittsburgh pitcher and Ashland, California native Don Robinson. Chicago, at 2-12, is off to a dreadful start in 1980.
RHP Robinson was in midseason form against the Cubs. He allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits, including a homer by Kingman, and fanned 10 in his 8-inning effort. Fans who gathered at Candlestick Park saw a good contest between the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
The San Francisco Giants downed the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, at Candlestick Park. Larry Herndon led the way, going 2-for-4 for San Francisco. Earning his 8th save for San Francisco was Al Holland. The Giants had to work out of trouble in the top of the sixth. The score was 5-2, San Francisco, with one out. Chicago, with runners on 1st and 2nd, was mounting a threat. Ken Henderson dug in at the plate, but on a 2-0 fastball, he grounded out. Kingman hit his first homer in over 3 weeks off RHP Tom Griffin. 05/30/1980 - Phillies Edge Past Cubs, 7-6
The Philadelphia Phillies relied on the hitting of second baseman Luis Aguayo to stop the Chicago Cubs, 7-6. For the game, Aguayo went 2-2 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs. The Phillies bumped their record to 23-19 with this latest triumph.
Aguayo had a game-changing home run in the top of the ninth. On a 2-2 splitter from Bruce Sutter, he banged a solo home run to right, giving the Phillies a 7-6 lead. 06/04/1980 - Expos Roll Cubs, 3-2
The Montreal Expos eked out a 3-2 win versus the Chicago Cubs at Stade Olympique. Nobody did more than pitcher Ross Grimsley Jr, who captured player of the game honors. In 7 innings, Grimsley Jr surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 3. He allowed 2 runs. The save was Elias Sosa's, his 14th.
The Expos got a big at-bat from first baseman Warren Cromartie. For the game, Cromartie was 1-3 with a walk. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 71st hit of the season gave Montreal a 1-0 lead. "We played a good game and came out on top," said Cromartie. Kingman took LHP Ross Grimsley Jr deep.
