It's not because they played with the Foo Fighters, it's because they played with the coaches. Practice limitations are important to prevent situations like what happened at the University of Maryland, especially in a sport as tiring and demanding of endurance as soccer. Also the penalties assessed weren't harsh at all, a few players will have to miss two 'supervised team activities'. The NCAA often oversteps their bounds but in this case I find their stance agreeable considering the punishment levied.
Not to derail the thread, but anyone that feels like getting up-in-arms over NCAA misdealings should look into SB Nation's Youtube 4-part documentary 'foul play'. It covers the Hugh Freeze Ole Miss recruiting scandal, very thorough and well-done. |

I never said it was because they played with the Foo FIghters. I said the impromptu game LED to sanctions.
And I know exactly what the rules are for. I also know this pickup game wasn't for practice, player evaluation, or to get a jump on the season. The NCAA knows it as well. That's what the rule was made for. These were people having dreaded, dastardly, immoral, disgusting, filthy, "how-dare-they!!" fun. The fact any entity would be forced to go thru the motions of such a trivial, insignificant event is good reason for the organization to be dissolved. Leave some frikkin' room for common sense for Pete's sake.

NCAA has to make this garbage up to justify its existence.
but they will never take action when a "too big to fail" program is actively cheating. that would hurt its bank account |

I was under the impression that most murderers are apprehended. So as long as they get everybody...

No. The police should be done away with when it no longer serves its purpose. The NCAA's mission is to make sure the athlete is treated the same as the student. It can no longer accomplish that task. It never could. As soon as it makes one rule the athlete has to follow that the rest of the student body can ignore, it has gone against the reason for its existence. The problem is not the enforcement, it's the fact the rule exists in the first place.

They gave a very light penalty on a very light offense as a way to remind people rules are rules. And there is nothing wrong with the rule at all. The idea is to ensure school teams don't find ways to have students spend more time on team activities. If you don't like this situation, the solution isn't getting rid of NCAA. There will forever be governing bodies for organized activities. If it's not called NCAA, it'd be something else but doing the same thing. To change the situation you'd need to change the mandate of this organized activity, and there are several different ways to do it. You can talk about those, but this incident is hardly a good starting point.
