Stealing home
So I was playing a game, minding my own business, when the AI attempted to steal home. I wasn't sure what the heck was going on at first because the runner was out by 87 feet. They were up 4-0 in the top of the 3rd when they tried it.. so I was wondering if that was a smart time to try it.
Then I was thinking is there ever a good time to try it? Seems like such a low percentage chance that the risk doesn't seem worth it..unless your up by 9 and want to rub it in. |

To me it only makes sense as a play that a top base stealer would attempt on his own when he sees the perfect circumstances. I wonder when was the last straight steal of home in MLB that was called from the dugout as opposed to being a spontaneous decision by a runner on base.

This doesn't answer your question, but I have seen a player on my team in my fictional league steal third and then home. I don't remember what the game situation was, but boy was it exciting. I was pretty happy with him and impressed in that moment.
Then, sometime in the future (it might have been the next season actually) I saw him attempt to steal home and get cut down with ease. (In both cases these were games I was playing out but with AI calling the shots.) I can't remember the situation that time either, but of course this time I'm thinking, you fool, why are running into an out when you are in such great scoring position? (This is a young player with- on a 1-10 scale- 10 speed and 10 SB ratings, as well as 10 base running ratings. And high intelligence. And yet, thus far he doesn't have a very good SB success rate.) Ah well. The frustrating life of a (pretend) baseball manager. |
