Will Rogers the baseball scout
I recently have started comparing my scout's player ratings to the OSA ratings. I never really checked this so I can't say if something has changed in the past year, or if this was always the case with him. However, it appears that he never met a player he didn't like.
In terms of current overall rating and potential overall rating, he is higher than OSA on nearly every player. Is this normal for scouts as a rule? Does it mean that I have overestimated his skills as an evaluator despite his reputation? If I look for a new scout, what is there to go on besides reputation? I do have a successful team, but I hate to think this guy has been pulling the wool over my eyes for the last 8 seasons. |

You know, I’m not sure that anyone has done a statistical analysis of stuff like this. It’s my belief that there is randomness in the engine, such that different scouts behave differently. What form that takes in the ratings, I just don’t know.
Would be curious to hear from others. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't mind if a mistake is made here or there. However, I've been calling players up and dishing out playing time based on his ratings. A few of them have had surprisingly poor results at the major league level. I am wondering if his overrating of talent has been an issue. I didn't notice anything in prior years, so maybe he's losing his fastball and/or mind. I think I need a scout to scout the scout. |

Well, I DO think that this is one area of the game that is true to life. There have to be thousands of cases where a scouting team has touted a player and he just didn’t cut it. There SHOULD always be that crapshoot element, where you feel compelled to play someone because your people told you he’s going to be good.
I’m struggling with this right now with a stud catching prospect. He was a 60/80 overall potential when I drafted him, is 50/80 now halfway through his rookie season and the kid can’t hit a lick. Like, he’s hitting something like .150 with a 150 BA lol. And I keep playing him. Meanwhile, I have another catcher with 35 potential who is never supposed to make the bigs who has been hitting .325 consistently all season long. Argh. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
