MLB Expansion Idea
I know I had brought this up a while ago, but I want to get a new poll and thoughts. I am going to simulate 2018 and then expand to 32 teams. I have 3 options in mind. Please vote for the one you like the most. If you have any recommendations to tweak one, please let me know as well.
I am pretty set on Portland, Charlotte and Nashville as the 3 finalists for the expansion teams. |

I'd strongly advise against going with four-team divisions. The likelihood of having a sub-.500 team making the playoffs is very high.

Don't realign unless you need to. Unbalanced divisions are fine.

I'd go with #1 ... and I absolutely agree with damientheomen3. In a setup like this I once had a 70-92 team win the division.

I think that when MLB does expand, after TB and OAK get new stadiums, they will go with the 4 division format rather than having two divisions of 8 teams per league. Plus I'm sure they will add more wildcard teams to make it more like the NBA.

For me, if I was doing this, I would change Portland to Vancouver and have 2 teams in Canada.
I would also go with a 6,5,5 team division in both leagues. Last edited by zappa1; 07-01-2018 at 07:18 AM. |

Which I would not care for. One reason I like baseball and football is because regular seasons matter and winning divisions is meaningful. I can't take a sport seriously when over 50% of the teams make the playoffs.

I’m considering eliminating the wildcard completely.

There is nothing wrong with 4 teams per division IF you don't mind playing your 3 rivals 30 times a year. Otherwise, I'd go with 2/8.
I went to 36 teams because I'm a nut and wanted a perfectly balanced schedule. I have 3 divisions of 6, no inter league, no DH, 2 wild cards (one game series). Teams play division rivals 18 times (other division teams 6 times). That said, it was an imported game and I've decided to do it ALL over again in OOTP 19. It's a LOT of work, but it's worth it. The goal is to have fun and if you don't like what you do, you can DO IT AGAIN! |

I have a 16 team league (4x4) all in one league, and I do the NFL playoff format with 2 byes, and 3v6 and 4v5 in the first round. I've had multiple seasons where one of the WC teams was top 3 in the standings. You'd end up having them miss without wild card, possibly for a team with like 10-15 less wins.

I am playing in year 2022 in my historical replay. And I have the 655 format. I placed Las Vegas in the American League West and Charlotte in the National League East. Those cities in my opinion are more deserving of expansion teams then and the other ones out there right now.

I voted for option 2 but I like the "Bambino Division" of option 1. Sox/Yanks and Nats/Orioles would make a great division.
