Upgrade confusion
I am currently running OOTP18 and intend to upgrade to OOTP19, but I prefer to do this only after I've completed a full historical season. (I'm currently in June of an "as played" season where I am the field manager of the 1962 Boston Red Sox. However, I have ordered a new computer which should arrive next week. I'm not sure what the best procedure is to best insure that I can continue to play in the historical mode (started in 1950 and have managed every game the BoSox played.
I have the serial number of my OOTP18 and have made a copy of the OOTP backup folder including copying all files. Any suggestions for the technically challenged would be appreciated. |

Install and license on the new computer.
In the saved_games folder will be your league folder that should have everything you need to move to the new game. Copy it and move it with Dropbox or on a USB drive. Put it in the saved_games folder on the new computer. I would post in the Historical sub-forum here to make sure there are not images stored outside of the saved_games folder I do not think there are. It is the only thing I am not 100% on. Good luck, Tom

1) Backup the league folder on your old computer.
If you have any custom stadium, fg_files, caps, jerseys, etc you should back these up too. 2) Un-license on the old computer. 3) install ootp 18 on new computer. 4) copy league folder to new installation. 5) verify ootp18 works with this league (logos, uniforms show correctly) 6) install ootp19 7) import the old league to ootp18. |

Many thanks for your response to my inquiry. I think I may be confusing how the Save Game folder differs from the Backup Folder (my eyes tend to glaze over after a few minutes of looking at the Manual). It sounds like this should be a very simple process; I don't mind if I lose some features like ballpark photos or player photos as these can always be added again. I just want to insure as much as possible that I don't lose all the "history" of replays of prior seasons. I will also take your suggestion to post my query in the Historical sub-forum. |

You don't even really need to install 18 on the new computer - just copy the .lg folder from your saved_games folder somewhere on the new computer and point 19 there when you import the game. The .lg folder from 18 could even sit on the desktop or a thumb drive.

OK, now I'm more confused than ever as your suggestion describes a process that's completely different than the prior response. If it's possible I'd prefer to just copy the SavedGames folder on my old computer to an USB drive and copy it to the SavedGames folder on the new computer after I've downloaded OOTP19. Is it your opinion that this wouldn't work? My primary concern is just preserving the history of the league...I don't much care about uniforms, caps, etc. Thanks for your input |

@eriqjaffe
This sounds more like the original advice I received from TGH-Adfabre. I'm still confused about the difference between the Saved_Games folder and the Backup Folder. |

" This advice will allow you to upgrade from 18->19 without having to install 18 on the new computer or 19 on the old computer. 3) I recommend using the saved_games folder because of familiarity. I have moved OOTP through 4 or 5 computer over 11 years and this process has been easy and functional for me. I would not move the entire saved_games folder. I would move the .lg folder of your league. I honestly do not know the difference between backup and .lg folders. When you back up and you do not play the game forward or make any in game changes they should be the same. I think. The main difference is that the backup folder does not advance as you play the game. It only contains the save from the manual or auto backups you make. The saved_games folder is the current state of your league. I would not cut or move any folders, I would copy so that if there is a problem you have the original. Hope that helps, Tom (LP)

IIRC, the content of the backup folder is actually identical (in structure) to the content of the saved_games folder. The difference is that the backup folder only updates when you explicitly back up the league from inside the game.

Just do what eriqjaffe said - copy the lg folder from the old computer (It's in the saved games folder, named "leaguename.lg") to the desktop of the new computer. Install and license OOTP 19. Start 19, select "Convert OOTP 18 League". Point to the world.dat file in the OOTP 18 league folder on your desktop. If it's a league with a lot of history, it can take a very long time to convert. Best to let it go over night. |

See this thread for an explanation on why it takes a long time to convert - http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=286272

@Bluenoser
re: " Point to the world.dat file in the OOTP 18 league folder on your desktop." Please excuse my ignorance, by "Point to" do you mean to click on that file? |

When you select "Import OOTP 18 League" you will be asked to select the World.dat file. You want to browse your computer to your OOTP18 .lg and select the world.dat file in that folder.

OK, now that all of you have spoon-fed me the procedure maybe I'll actually be able to get it done! If so, I'll come back and buy you all a digital drink!
