Drafting/Developing Pitchers
In every sim/save I play I seem to have no trouble drafting/developing hitters. My young bats seem to always perform well in the minors and get into the Majors and be productive. However, the pitchers I draft often have ERAs in the 6 or 7s and never get past High A ball. Does anyone have tips from drafting/developing arms? Thanks.

Probably a dev question, but would the engine numbers support hiring all minor league coaches with control as their focus, then drafting only pitchers with high stuff but low control, and then letting them develop. Obviously, most would still fail, but you only need to get a through few the system every few years to be successful.

Yeah I look at FIP- and ERA+ and HR/9, BB/9, and K/9 to judge mechanics.
But I try and stay away from top prospects who only have 3 pitches and the 3rd pitch a "change up" with high potential but low current like 20-35. That pitch almost never ever develops. Sometimes in IFA or 18 year old high school guys but it can take like 5-7 years if at all. 4 pitches is usually ok even if change never develops Or if 3rd pitch isn't a changeup then it develops more in my experience. I see that 20/30 current rating for "change up" its like the kiss of death. I'll only draft or sign that player if I feel like trading him to a team that eliminated me from the playoffs. Let them turn him into a reliever after 7 years in the minors. |
