IF Deep option

Amongst the various defensive alignments is the option to play your infield deep. Is this to prevent the ball from leaving the infield.. but presumably and quick runner would make this strategy unsound? So in short: what situation warrants the IF deep alignment?

So.. with two outs and a runner on 1st, one would go with a Infield Deep formation?

This is what I found, so assuming one can relate that web sites terminology to OOTP's, you can see some of the reasoning behind the strategy,

http://cmbaseballsoftball.org/2e5ca8...3833/37462.pdf

This is WAY more detailed on the same subject. Even in otherwise identical situations, a fast runner on first with a weak armed catcher and a pitcher who doesn't hold runners well, might not be handled identically if it instead was a slow runner, a catcher with a cannon, and Steve Carlton on the mound.
