Stealing Home
Was always afraid to try it. Mainly because I only play out post-season games and never wanted to take the risk.
Just now, I meant to click on "Take Pitch" but clicked on "Steal Home" right under it. My fastest guy happened to be on third at the time. He took off. Pitch was a ball. I saw the catcher stand up. That's when I realized what I did. Catcher was waiting for an eternity before the runner was even halfway home. "Tag was high" and he was safe. |

Thats awesome.
I stole home 1 time so far with Mickey Moniak. I know it was 2 outs. I forget who up to bat. But basically no chance of a hit and I needed the run. I think he was like 75/80 speed guy at the time. I was like it does happen or attempt to happen around a handful of times each year in MLB. So should I dare go for it?????????? I did. SAFE SAFE SAFE. And I promptly never ever tried for it again. But every time I am on 3rd with a fast guy. I am like hey self remember that time you stole home? yup. and it was awesome. So you only play out the playoffs? I know a lot of players do that. But if I am not playing a couple of series each month and if I go to take control just in playoffs the AI smokes me. Then I'm like ah ok time to let the computer sim it. And promptly destroy the AI teams. |

I also only play out the playoff games. Never had the balls to try to steal home, though.

Nice thread. Always been out on my three steals of home. For the record I too only play out post season games. 😊

I've always been too chicken as well
I like to carry a super-fast PR on my roster whenever I can, next time I get one to 3B when the pitcher's up I'll try it. I assumed it was a near-automatic out (and my guys seem to be getting thrown out too much this season by lousy catchers too).

I always wondered why you can't double steal with runners on 1st and 3rd.

That's an excellent question, since one of Billy Martin's favorite tricks was to have the guy on first get "caught in a rundown" long enough that the guy on 3B could break for home.

I was in a situation once where I really wanted to get a save for my closer (I had already clinched the playoffs and my closer was close to the record for saves). I was up by three runs in the top of the ninth and I had bases loaded. Instead of chancing a hit by the batter and ruining my save chance, I decided to steal home, guaranteeing (in my mind) an out and keeping my save chance intact.
....wouldn't you know it... he was SAFE!!! Now that the save chance was gone, I figured I might as well have the batter swing away and of course, he popped out.

I find it surprising how hard it is to steal 2nd with runners on first and third and less than 2 outs. It's like the AI doesn't take the risk of a bad throw into account. I don't have stats on it, just a gut feel.
Other thing I notice on stealing; the AI steals with a large lead much more often than teams do in real life. |
