Play OOTP just to replicate historical seasons
Hello community. Before I choose to invest in OOTP, and the learning curve, I would like to understand if OOTP can be played just to replicate past seasons. I just want to replay history. Not interested in Owner/GM actions. Can all of these things be turned off so that I can just replay historical seasons? I just want to replay seasons as they were without doing trades and GM things and the like. Thank you for any feedback.

Also, when you start a league you can select historical transactions/lineups.

Thank you gentleman. I thought for sure the GM type things could be turned off, just wanted to verify. I just enjoy doing season replays, have been an APBA card and dice guys for many years, just wanted to switch over to PC play. I do understand there is a large learning curve, so I'll just have to take my time finding a starting point in learning and go from there.

It is a lot of fun just playing the individual seasons. I'm playing the sixties. Now into 1964 season. Lots of fun. Well worth purchasing OOTP!!!

Besides playing the current season I'm also playing 1913, 1924, 1948, 1964, and 1977. Most of these I've played 2-3 years worth and still going. 1924 is my newest historic season. Each morning with my coffee I decide which one I'm going to play. Being a Phillies fan, I'm playing running the Phils except 1964. In '64 I'm the Twins. I always liked that team a lot. Wish I could control both the '64 Phils and Twins. I also have 2 fantasy leagues that I play just to change it up.

What you want to do can definitely be done. OOTP really has limitless amounts of options on how to play your game. The learning curve can be steep, but this version of OOTP is the most "user friendly" yet. They revamped scouting reports and such so you can really get immersed in your experience and learn on the go.
The community is also the absolute best of any game I've came across. Everyone is willing to help newer players learn. Hell, I learn new things all the time, still. |

I use OOTP strictly for historical replays plus creating projects spanning baseball's history. I have never touched the GM options because I don't want to be a front office "suit." I am creating "Best of Franchise" universes that I will post here as Quickstarts. As for replays, I am replaying 1922, 1934, 1967, and 1991. I manage each game for the team I am manager of. I play 11 different baseball sims and I do all of them as replays. I love them all for different reasons but OOTP is king. Thus far, anything I can imagine in terms of creating baseball universes I can do in OOTP. You mentioned the learning curve and really it's not that steep. It APPEARS to be a steep learning curve only because this game is quite comprehensive in what you can do. What I would suggest is that you create an historical universe. When you play, just pay attention to the Manager's Office section. That is what got me past the "holy crap this game is REALLY hard to navigate" feeling. After you play a few games, jump to the League option and just look around until you're comfortable. Do the same with the other options. In no time you'll be an OOTP pro!! Play ball!!! PS: OOTP is amazingly accurate. Diamond Mind used to be the sim that baseball writers would use to forecast seasons. OOTP now has that coveted spot. I will go so far as to assert that OOTP is not only the best baseball simulation on the market, it is also the best SIM of anything on the market. I hope you'll join us!! Seems like you and I like to do multiple simultaneous projects. I too wish that OOTP gave us the option of managing more than one team in any given league. For me at least, that is OOTP's Achilles heal and one of Action PC Baseball's strengths. That said, I have bought every edition of OOTP since the very first in 1999 and this great game ALWAYS delivers far more than I had hoped for. ![]() Play ball!!. |

Thank you for your kind input. I haven't yet taken the plunge into ordering OOTP given I have been preparing for the SABR Convention in Pittsburgh starting next week. This event is the heart of my Baseball year and takes all my focus for a bit. When it is over (June 24) and I return home, I will obtain OOTP and get started.

This is what I love about this game. What is being described here doesn't sound like anything I'd want to do, and yet this game is amazing. It has something for everyone, and for most, it has several modes to enjoy. Great job on the game, and enjoy tbradley. Welcome aboard, hopefully you have a lot of free time.

I play mainly historical games in the '70s/80s. I like to start in a given year and watch from afar while doing real-time simulation every day. I set each franchise up so rookies are assigned to their historical teams. I'm fine with players being traded (or even moving on in free agency once that kicks in following the 1976 season) because I do want to see some variance from real life in team performance.
But with rookies going to their original teams, I still get that feel that each team had in a given time period. So the Reds feel like the Reds, the Dodgers feel like the Dodgers, etc., even if a handful of guys move along, even if it's a big name or two that moves along. I look at the way my leagues are set up like it's the best of both worlds. And some of it becomes a "what if" thing, too, like Joe Morgan staying with the Astros instead of being traded to Cincinnati after the '71 season. Both teams' performances are a little different. The Astros have been more of a contender, and the Reds have been more of a .500 team because they don't have Morgan or George Foster, who stays with the Giants instead of being traded. The Giants have been a real force because Foster, Gaylord Perry, Garry Maddox, Dave Kingman, to name a few, stayed with them. Last edited by cheo25; 06-15-2018 at 10:32 AM. |
