That time of year: a lament

Yes, it's that time of year, when sports other than baseball take center stage and baseball gets buried in the football news. For those who love football, it's no problem, but for those who have no sport they love but baseball, it's a sad time. And if you're a Met fan like me, and know your team will not be in the postseason, it's even sadder.

It's funny, you would think that with the end of the season, interest would peak, but perhaps the length of the baseball season causes people to tire of it. Not me. I could go for year-round baseball. I already can't wait for spring training.

Anyway, it's time to see the baseball threads gradually disappear in favor of football threads in which I cannot take part.

I've noticed that as well. I will do my part to try and keep baseball discussion alive here during the offseason.

Baseball is my first and truest love...well, in the world of sports at least. I think we'll still see some baseball threads around here.

I actually enjoy the break. I am a football fan, but I guess that part of the geek in me likes that baseball is gone during the winter. It makes spring so much more special...my favorite time of year, in fact.

I cannot wait for Tonight's Marlins-Phillies game. I have not been this excited since the 1997 Game 7. I can't wait. Time to see if the fish are for real.

I FEAST on Sunday pro football but baseball is my real sustenance. Football is an event; baseball is my day to day routine. They each mean something very different for me and I am thankful to have both. When asked to pick a favorite, they are each my favorite in different ways and I’d hate to be without either.

As far as NBA and NHL coverage getting in the way of baseball, you can take them. I am a casual fan of the NBA and not even that of hockey. It seems as if the playoffs just ended and they are starting up training camps. Too bad hockey can’t be like that World Cup Soccer deal and come around once every four years.

I have no interest for pro football whatsoever (but I do have a passing interest in college football). I also get greatly bummed because all the sports talk shows seemingly run wall-to-wall Bears coverage from July to January around here. I know I am exaggerating, but it seems like the fact the Cubs and Sox are both in contention is taking place on another world when you listen to the sports shows here.

To make matters even worse, I am a Notre Dame football fan.

I suppose you have a point, but there's just something about baseball being around that makes me feel better.

There's a softball league around me that actually just started up and plays until late September, then goes indoors and plays until around December. Sometimes I used to play in the league, and now I sometimes follow them. It's just not the same, though.

This is the sad state that those who control the game of baseball have done to the game. Baseball is not the passion in many peoples lives like it once was, and the change that needs to happen will never happen, and that is a salary cap. When most people think of baseball they think of greed, when people think of football it's my team may have a chance to make the playoffs. I love football and look forward to Sunday's, but baseball no matter what they do to it will alway's be my true passion.

At this point of the juncture, the cat's out of the bag, but what I really miss about baseball are the George Bretts, Robin Younts and Mike Schmidts of the game. Players actually being synonymous with organizations.

I also think of greed when it comes to baseball, but I hate all of the forced moves and even greater turnover in football. Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Yeah, it would be great to get a salary cap in baseball and have the teams operate a little more evenly. But what baseball really does need is more franchise players like Brett and Yount, and I'm afraid that's gone for good.

What a terrible mess. Game wasn't even close. Oh well maybe there will be a good game tonight.

The time of year is fast approaching once again. Another week and it's bye-bye.

Not even that. Sox sweep the Cardinals out on Wednesday night.

If the Sox sweep the Cards, I'm sure there will be a few days' worth of threads about it, so I think it can make it another week.

I stop caring about baseball once the Mets are eliminated.

So usually around June.

I've always been a bigger football fan anyways, especially after the last strike.

Wouldn't it be something if the Sox last win of the season comes on Tuesday night? The threads wouldn't stop for at least a month after that

I feel a genuine sadness every year when baseball season ends. I do find myself watching far less TV though when there isn't any baseball on.
