Why do so many OFers in historic games have "cannon arms"

It seems like 80% (not overstating) of OFers I see in historic games 50s-80s have "cannons for arms".

Anyone know why this is?

What specific year? What rating on a 20-80 scale is described as a cannon, and how many outfielders have that rating or higher? What percentage is that of the total number of outfielders in the game that year?
