Probably a simple question re beards and historical facegen

Hey all, sorry for the stupidity of what I'm about to ask. While I've played out countless historical replays in OOTP I've never used the historical facegen stuff until OOTP 19.

So I have the historical facegen pack loaded and it's working fine for the players I'm importing, but of course they are importing without facial hair. I have my 1871 teams set to allow facial hair, I have the game's default numbers for beard settings (30% no beard and the default 73 for all the different types of facial hair), so it seems to me that when I have the game redo pictures it should have 70% of the guys with some kind of facial hair. However, that isn't happening. I'm sure I'm just overlooking something, but what is it? Are the historical facegens somehow overriding the regular beard settings? (If I create fictional players they have beards at the proper rate.) Assuming the historical facegens are indeed doing this, how do I stop them from doing it while still using the historical packs?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the simple question that I'm sure is due to something I'm overlooking.

I'm pretty sure that only fictional players get facial hair.

I can't think what setting would do this. The game removing facial hair from players with facegens that feature facial hair doesn't make sense to me. Can you post examples of guys that had facial hair IRL? I can think of several off the top of my head (George Davis, Dave Stieb, Rollie Fingers, and Charlie Ganzel come to mind) that have pronounced facial hair in my games. Fingers even has his handlebar moustache in one of my games.

Well, it's as simple as this: none of the 1871 players have facial hair. About 80% of them did in reality. So: George Zettlein, Cap Anson, Dave Birdsall, Davy Force, etc. I used the historical facegens for each of them, and they all imported with the right basic face structure but no facial hair.

I changed no settings that I can think of that would be relevant.

I can't find Birdsall or Zettlein in any of my games, but here are my Anson and Force facegens. No facial hair as you can see.

Okay, thanks. Maybe it really is true that the historical facegens don't have the real facial hair. Ugh.

At least it means I'm not doing it wrong, so I suppose that's something.

Not so my good man. As evidence, may I present George Davis:

The free FaceGen software that a lot of the community uses does tend to smooth out faces - glasses don't always get completely erased, but they always look kind of...off.

I think the theory is that things beyond the complexion and facial structure are generally added or overlaid onto the 3d model afterwards as separate constructs. But that's really just a semi-educated guess on my part, but regardless I'm pretty sure that if a .fg file is found (as opposed to a game-generated face), the game-defined facial hair is ignored.

Okay, so it's editing the 1870s guys by hand if I want to do it. So another question, possibly equally stupid: is there a setting where I can stop the game from ever updating the pictures unless I do it manually? I went through and fixed the facial hair on the 115 players from 1871, and just noticed that when the game has updated their pictures (presumably because of mood changes) it has erased the facial hair.

I just want to be able to put in the right facial hair and not have it get erased. Sorry, I know I'm putting way more effort into this than is strictly necessary, but now I'd really like to see it through.

Oh, and I see the setting to turn it to either auto-update on mood/team change (which I had previously set it to) or to update on January 1. I've switched it to January 1st, but I'd really rather not go through all this again for next season. Is there a way I can lock in place the player's facial hair?
