Trading Draft Picks

Hi, I have a hopefully simple question, and I'll use my current predicament. I have four first-round draft picks right now (3 via trade), and I am thinking of using one in a trade. As you all probably know, though, when I am on the trade screen, if I pick Add Draft Picks - 1st Round Pick, it doesn't specify which one of my 1st round picks I would actually be trading. In what order does it default? Does it pick the lowest one first? The highest one? The original one I own? The last one I traded for? I wish it was more clear.

But thanks for any answers.

This question keeps getting asked and there never is a firm answer. It's not a common enough occurrence to lead to well-known outcome and it is not clear to me how it could even be tested.

In only one of these threads did somebody even venture an opinion as to what happens:

Here's what I would do:
  • Backup your game
  • Create a new game from the backup
  • Make the trade
  • See what draft pick gets sent over
  • Make another trade with a first-round pick
  • See what pick gets sent over that time
  • Continue process until all first-round picks have been traded
  • See if you can discern a pattern

I'd be curious to see the results

In my experience the trade always takes your top draft pick from within that round.

in Our online league we trade picks and it seems to trade away the pick that you actually earned by virtue of your position in last year's standings. So, your "original" pick.

just thinking out-loud here.... but what would happen if you selected "1st round pick" for the top spot in the trade window.... then in the second slot, picked "1st round pick" again.... and the third slot, "1st round pick" yet again.... assuming it goes from top to bottom, the third slot would be the lowest pick... then clear out slots 1 and 2 and make the trade

not sure if it would still default to the top pick, but worth a shot to test it out if you can.

(edit: assuming, of course, it will let you put all three 1st round picks into three different slots at the same time)

i tried that.. didn't work. still takes top pick. (*** at least 4-5 versions ago? so, could have changed). there's no way to avoid this problem with multiple picks from same round... this is definitely some weak tea. a very basic functionality of trade system should be expected to work properly, lol)

maybe: offer another trade with the first round pick and submit 'first' to protect it... then make sure to withdraw trade after you submit 2nd trade with the non-top pick from that round that you own.

i never tried that. i always did the following to avoid it: when i had draft pick trading on, the only way to avoid this is to make sure to trade the first round pick, first. so, that was the first trade i would propose -- trading my #1 with a package to get a #1 i won't trade. not a perfect workaround, but with a bit of forethought you can avoid the situation in many contexts with simply doing one thing first before others.

having the top 2 picks or 3 of top 5 etc or more will make you unstoppable. WS 90-99% of the time even a 130+ win team can lose in playoffs -- especially if many rounds involved.
