Do these actually matter in the game? I need to know if I should be sending guys off the DL for a while. And, if they do matter, is there any indication as to the amount of time that's appropriate.

From what I've seen and heard any player who has been out for a significant period of time will need some playing time to get back up to full speed, performance-wise. Personally, if I have an important player who has been out on the 10-day DL and his injury didn't keep him out much longer than that, I will usually just bring him back to the active roster and let him work the rust off at the major league level. (Unless the player who has replaced him is doing so well that I want to keep him up a bit longer.) But with longer-term injuries, and certainly anyone returning from the 60-day DL, I will let them get back into playing shape at AAA.
As for how long, well, it really depends. With a young starting pitcher of mine who recently returned from a somewhat lengthy DL stint, I watched as he got shelled in his first three starts at AAA, then saw he pitched a gem in the fourth start, and with the season winding down decided he was ready to return. And that mostly worked out fine. But I take these things on a case by case basis. |
