Confused about Rule 5 draft eligibility
I have a bunch of teenaged players in my organization who are showing as Rule 5 draft eligible despite having very small amounts of pro ball experience. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
One guy is 17. Did they draft him out of middle school or something? He shows 0 years and 184 days as a professional.

The likely cause here is that he was signed as a minor league free agent. Remember, players in their first few years are only protected under certain circumstances, and a 17-year-old minor league free agent is unlikely to fit those criteria.

Thanks. There's nothing in the manual or any explanations in-game about players not being protected if they are signed as FAs...

https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Rule_5_Draft
http://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com/...e=rule_5_draft Here are the best links to Rule 5 draft info if you have not read them. But yeah that 17 yearold being eligible is weird. The only guys I've had taken from me are in AAA and (on 20-80 scale) with potential rated higher than 45-50. One I should have DFA'd a lower guy to get him on my 40-man roster. Another guy was released back to me before the season started. |

Also I "shop" minor league players around that may get drafted (these bring in good deals) or guys I don't want to risk waive/DFA'ing and losing for nothing on the wire in the weeks leading up to the Rule 5 draft.
For guys that may get drafted, I look at the rule 5 draft eligible players list and if they are at the top for overall and potential I might make a trade or waive from my 40-man accordingly. It sucks to lose a player for nothing imo. |

Thanks.
I only lost one guy and got three pretty good ones. Of greater concern is that I now have to send some marginal guys back through waivers to clean out my 40 man, but that's life I suppose... |
