Rusty Staub former Met and Expos among other teams passed away at the age of 73
"Affectionately dubbed "Le Grand Orange," Staub was a six-time All-Star and the only player in major league history to have at least 500 hits with four teams. He became a huge hit with fans in the U.S. and Canada, most adored in New York and Montreal.
A savvy, reliable slugger with left-handed power and a discerning eye, Staub played from 1963 to 1985 and finished 284 hits shy of 3,000. He had 3+ great seasons with the Detroit Tigers and batted .300 for the Texas Rangers in 1980. He broke into the majors as a teenager with Houston, lasted into his 40s with the Mets and spent decades doing charity work in the New York area. "There wasn't a cause he didn't champion," the Mets said. He owned and operated two popular Manhattan restaurants that bore his name, and authored a children's book titled "Hello, Mr. Met!" Staub was the first star for the expansion Montreal Expos in 1969, embraced by French-Canadian fans at Parc Jarry who appreciated that he learned their language. He made three straight All-Star teams with Montreal and hit a career-high 30 home runs for the last-place Expos in 1970. Though he spent only three full seasons in Montreal, plus a 38-game reunion in 1979, his No. 10 became the first uniform jersey retired by the team in 1993. Long after the Expos moved to Washington and were renamed the Nationals before the 2005 season, he remains one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Staub was traded to the Mets in 1972 and one year later helped lead them to a surprising National League pennant. Spurred by a now-famous rallying cry from reliever Tug McGraw -- "Ya Gotta Believe!" -- the Mets upset heavily favored Cincinnati, with Staub socking three home runs in the first four games of their best-of-five NL playoff". http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ba...icle-1.3902929 Last edited by SPORTSMEM817; 03-29-2018 at 10:15 AM. |

Carl Scheib former Philadelphia Athletic passed away at the age of 91
After all, Scheib was merely a "15-year-old farm boy" when he auditioned for Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack.
"I had a good life, just one break after another," said Scheib following his pitch to Senators catcher Brian Jeroloman. "I was 15 went I went down to Philadelphia. It was 120 miles away and I thought it was the other end of the country. I didn't know anything. I was used to playing in county parks, so can you imagine walking into [Shibe Park] and seeing 35,000 people?" Scheib was a standout pitcher athlete in Gratz but his opportunity to play professionally is affixed to Hannah Clark and a salesman named Al Grossman. As the story goes, Clark was a local grocer in Gratz who made sure Grossman, who just happened to have friends in the Athletics' organization, knew about the talented Scheib. Grossman eventually penned a letter to Mack, always on the look out for players who could help improve his struggling Athletics. By September 1942, Scheib was in Philadelphia when Mack, after the Athletics were rained out, told the youngster to head for the bullpen. "I didn't have any glove or shoes," Scheib said. "The game had been rained out so I went through the clubhouse and got a glove and shoes. Everyone was standing around watching me. Lucky enough, I could throw pretty hard, had a good curve, and change up. Connie Mack told me to hurry back next year." By 1943, 16-year-old Scheib was pitching batting practice in spring training and he eventually got the blessing from his father to leave school and pursue a career in baseball. With his father co-signing the deal because of his age, Scheib was paid $800 ($500 bonus) for the remainder of the 1943 season. "We were coming home on the train and Mack pulled me into his little office on the train," Scheib said. "He said 'Don't you think it's about time?' and I told him I was ready." While adjusting to being a teenager in professional baseball wasn't easy, Scheib made his way through 11 seasons with the Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals, his career interrupted (1945-46) with his military service. The link to his obit is below and the B&W photos came from the Lexi files and the other one is a mock up I made years ago. Unkown 'reds' eBay
Can anyone ID the two Cincinnati Reds players on an eBay site. The two Reds players are listed under the user ID: b-e-collectibles. You can also search on eBay by typing in: Late 1960's snapshot Reds 2 different. Thank you in advance for any help! Regards 'luvbblogos' - 5¢ a pack. (PS I still don't know how to download a photo, I'm good up to the URL request?)

Very nice tribute to Carl Scheib by SPORTSMEM817.
Scheib played virtually his entire career with the Philadelphia Athletics, with just 3 games as a St. Louis Cardinal in 1954 that ended his career as the only MLB games where Scheib wasn't with the Philly A's. First MLB game & first game with the Phila. A's at age 16 (9/6/1943). Last game with Phila. A's at age 27 (5/3/1954) and last MLB game three weeks later (Cardinals - 5/24/1954). Larry Don Miller former NY Met passed away at the age of 80
At the University of Kansas, he completed an Engineering degree and was signed by the LA Dodgers. He served as an officer in the U.S. Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma before reporting to the Dodgers in 1964 and was then traded to the New York Mets where he played in 1965 and 1966. His claim to fame was as the last pitcher Casey Stengel took out of a game.

Luis Alberto ID ???
In their previous eBay offering, Topps Vault has ID this Pirate as Luis Alberto, 1979. He wears number 11. Can't find any player under that name, MLB or MiLB, except many that have 2 first names Luis Alberto, but none with the Pirates.

Luis Alberto ID?
My guess would be Shortstop Jimmy Smith. He wore uniform #11 in 1982. See below for his image from his 1982 Topps card.
My assumption was that whoever used the caption "Luis Alberto" was trying to say "Alberto Lois" based on the uniform number, but picked the wrong guy. The uniform worn in the photo was used by the Pirates from 1977 through 1984. |

Thanks to both of you for trying to help me, but I don't think it's either of them. Salazar has a darker complexion than this player, and Smith's nose smaller, narrower, and on another Fleer card, his hair not curly at all.
