Signing an Injured Player out 9 Months to 1 Year Deal

I am playing a standard MLB save and I noticed that Trevor Rosenthal was signed by the Cubs to a one year deal for $2,800,000. What would be the reason for this as he won't be eligible to play in 2018 as he is out for 9 months. Not saying this is an issue, just curious if I missed the reasoning for it.

Sorry if this was asked and addressed already. Thanks.

Does the deal include an option on it? In real life teams will often sign long term injured free agents to 1 year deals + team option to see how the player recovers.

I’ve noticed that same thing in two separate saves. It was challenge mode so I was unable to stop it. I agree it makes no sense. It was also Trevor Rosenthal.

There was no team option on these deals that I saw.

Twins just signed Michael Pineda to a two year deal even though he won't throw a pitchc this season. I would imagine the team option is likely.

No, that I would expect and thought about myself. There is a bonus for 60 innings pitched though... Guess they felt pretty safe there.

I had the same exact thing happen. No option - not like Pineda deal. Probably a bug.

Three times. 3/3.

Here's one I just ran a minute ago: Ten games into the season I see this:

Seems like a small bug. Hey, they paid 2.8 million just to have first rights at negotiating an extension!

A month into my current game and Rosenthal is still unsigned but being pursued by a number of teams- I noticed on his contract screen in my game that he is shown as being arbitration eligible (the screenshot posted here says otherwise though so I'm not sure)- I wonder if that is playing a role in the team's thinking where, if he really is arb eligible it's somewhat like the deal with option scenarios discussed earlier.

Looks like this may be the case. Prior to being signed (he's at 5 years 58 days) he would be arbitration eligible but once signed, he is placed on the secondary roster and time starts to accrue which would then make him eligible for free agency. Good catch.

I don't think he will be arb eligible if signed as a free agent like this. Note on the contract page it says signed through 2018 (free agent) as opposed to (arb).

I'm not positive though.
