Pruning minor leagues

Is there any downside to releasing a large number of the 1/2 star potential players populating my minor league teams? Do I need a full roster at any of the levels?

if you don't have enough players (and don't use ghost players) the game will not advance. you'll get "illegal # of players" error until you add players to all teams short of players.
you don't need a glut of players at lower levels, but enough to cover injuries and move ups to higher levels.
