Is there a drug policy and testing in the Alltime Baseball League? If so I hope Bonds is tested, caught, and given a lifetime suspension from the league.

Eastern League South

Alabama 4, Orlando 2. Greg Maddux (11-11, 4.31) threw eight innings of two-run ball and Mike Stanton picked up his 34th save as Alabama methodically picked apart Juan Guzman (9-10, 3.87) for four runs over seven innings to open up a 3 ½ game lead over idle Charlotte.

Western League South

Phoenix 6, Los Angeles 4. The Scorpions completed a 3-game sweep of the Lightning to take over first place by a half game in the Western League South. The Lightning's Willie Mays hit two homers off Stephen Strasburg, who allowed four runs over 7 ⅓ and took the no-decision. Ron Guidry outpitched Strasburg, allowing three runs over eight innings, but saw it all undone when rookie closer Koji Uehara allowed a game-tying homer to Boog Powell in the ninth and a subsequent walkoff two-run shot to Frank Howard later in the inning. Diego Segui (5-3, 3.23) picked up the win in relief for Phoenix.

Lightning has to catch some in a bottle sooner rather than later!

They have one more three-game set together, in L.A. I hadn't really noticed it until the last couple of games, but New Orleans has gotten themselves into contention. Only 4 1/2 out. But I don't think they have the horses to really pull it off.

Hopefully Markus didn't code a drug suspension if Bonds appears in OOTP!

Eastern League South

Alabama 7, Charlotte 5. The Slammers rallied for five runs over the final three innings to come back and hand the Cougars their sixth loss in seven games as the teams opened a three-game set in Charlotte. Despite Ian Kinsler’s two hits, Alabama manager Ron Gardenhire pinch hit for him in the top of the 9th with Floyd Robinson, who stroked a tiebreaking two-run double off loser Hoyt Wilhelm (9-6, 3.65). Mike Stanton picked up his third win. Mark Belanger drove in three runs for Charlotte in the loss.

Western League South

New Orleans 1, Phoenix 0. If you blinked you missed it, but the New Orleans Knights - despite the Western League’s worst offense and a staff ERA in the bottom half - have taken advantage of Phoenix and L.A.’s respective falloffs to get themselves into contention. Here, Tom Glavine (3-2, 3.24) - making his fourth start since being moved from the bullpen to the rotation - threw eight shutout innings of three-hit ball to shut down the Scorpions and best Mike Moore (13-14, 4.12), who was victimized only by Daniel Murphy’s seventh inning RBI triple to break a scoreless tie. Brandon Morrow saved his 31st for New Orleans, who are now only 3 ½ games behind.

San Antonio 7, Los Angeles 2. The Lightning dropped their fourth straight as recent callup Ken Heintzelman allowed two runs over eight innings in his second career start to pick up his first big league win. Tommy Leach hit his sixth homer and drove in three and Tony Clark also drove in a pair. Jose Rosado (12-13, 4.09) allowed all seven runs for Los Angeles. Willie Mays went 0-for-4 and sits two points behind Denver’s Ty Cobb for the batting title in his pursuit of the triple crown - .325 to .323.

Eastern League South

Charlotte 5, Alabama 4. The Cougars earned a much-needed win, but it came at a cost as Schoolboy Rowe (14-9, 3.35) left in the fourth inning with a shoulder injury. But Jon Niese threw four innings of solid relief, backed by homers from Oscar Gamble and Dale Murphy, and Bryan Harvey got six outs for his 41st save. Vic Willis (14-12, 3.76) never found a groove on the hill for Alabama, who got a homer from Johnny Mize - his 13th - in the loss.

Western League South

Phoenix 7, New Orleans 2. The call for Nels Potter (3-9, 5.59) to be pulled from the rotation in Phoenix has been loud, but he came through here, allowing two runs over 7 ⅓ as Phoenix got a homer from Boog Powell, his 19th, and two RBI from Sid Gordon to top the Knights. Eppa Rixey (12-9, 4.11) labored through five innings for New Orleans.

Los Angeles 9, San Antonio 5. After being held scoreless through six innings, Lightning struck - four times - as L.A. hit four homers and scored nine runs over the final three innings for the victory. Vlad Guerrero (17), Danny Litwhiler (5), Buddy Rosar (1) and Mike Cameron (4), homered for Los Angeles as Bill Donovan (8-11, 4.29) just suddenly lost it after a dominant start. Greg Harris (9-11, 4.32) allowed two runs over 7 ⅔. But Los Angeles has a real concern in closer Koji Uehara, who had his second straight terrible outing, allowing three runs over 1 ⅔ innings.

Eastern League South

Charlotte 8, Alabama 3. Birdie Cree’s sixth-inning grand slam off Bruce Chen (3-2, 5.06) carried Charlotte to take two out of of three from the Slammers. Dana Fillingim (4-3, 5.40) weaved through trouble to allow three runs over 7 ⅓ for Charlotte. The teams meet for their final series of the season Sept. 28-30 in Alabama.

Western League South

New Orleans 7, Phoenix 4. Larry Doby hit two homers off John Thomson (7-8, 3.89) and drove in four runs for the Knights, who took two out of three in Phoenix. John Smoltz (14-10, 4.38) allowed two runs over eight innings. The homers were Doby’s first two of the season after a torn meniscus kept him out from April until September 6th.

San Antonio 4, Los Angeles 3 (10 innings). Wally Berger’s RBI single off Bill Campbell in the bottom of the 10th gave the Stallions two out of three over the Lightning and gave them their 68th win, a franchise high. Doc Ayers allowed two runs over seven inning but Greg Holland blew the save in the top of the ninth when he allowed a game-tying RBI single to Eric Chavez. A.J. Burnett was allowed to start the 10th and took the loss, falling to 14-11 on year. Mark Teixeira (14) and Mike Cameron (5) homered for the Idols.

Elsewhere in the ABL...

  • Josh Hamilton picked up his 100th RBI of the season for Memphis, his second time reaching the mark. He joins Sam Crawford, Willie Mays and Johnny Mize as the only players to reach 100 RBI twice in the ABL’s first three seasons, though Ed Delahanty is one RBI away from joining that club.
  • Louisville's Rich Hill picked up his 42nd save, an ABL record.
  • Orlando's Scott Sanderson became the first ABL pitcher to lose 20 games in a season.
  • While Willie Mays' fight with Ty Cobb for the Western League batting title has gotten the attention because of Mays' pursuit of the triple crown, the Eastern League batting race has been fantastic. Chicago's Charlie Hollocher is at .343, Memphis' Ed Delahanty is at .342 and Charlotte's Elmer Flick is at .341.

Eastern League South

Memphis 13, Alabama 8. The Sounds’ Mike Hampton (15-10, 3.81) got his ugliest win of the season but was helped by a 19-hit, eight-double attack as Memphis battered Derek Lowe (11-9, 5.30) and Alabama, who dropped their third straight. Snuffy Stirnweiss (6) and Chili Davis (11) homered for Memphis, while Albert Pujols hit his 27th for Alabama. Ed Delahanty had three hits to take over the lead in the Eastern League batting race, and also notched his 100th RBI of the season.

Western League South

Los Angeles 8, New Orleans 7 (15 innings). Mark Teixeira hit a two-out, walk-off homer - his 15th - off Dave Boswell (5-5, 2.63) in the bottom of the 15th inning to end this marathon affair. New Orleans had scored two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie, but Los Angeles answered with two runs in the bottom half before each team’s bats went silent. Dave Burba (4-1, 1.57) earned the win for the Lightning, who knotted up the Western League South division with Phoenix with 13 games remaining. Gary Sheffield (13) and Larry Doby (3) homered for New Orleans. Teixeira, Danny Litwhiler (6) and Hack Wilson (20) homered for Los Angeles.

Elsewhere in the ABL...
  • Denver's Tim Raines is hitting .421 this month and in the last week has reached enough plate appearance to qualify for the batting crown, where he is now tied with Willie Mays at .324, a point behind Raines' Denver teammate, Ty Cobb, at .325.

Eastern League South

Alabama 2, Memphis 1. The Sounds had crept within six games of Alabama and chatter had started that Memphis could threaten with a sweep in Alabama. The Slammers wouldn’t let that happen. Tom Underwood matched Greg Maddux as each pitched into the eighth allowing only one run. But Tito Francona hit a walkoff RBI single off Bob Friend (5-5, 1.34) to plate Jack Clements and give Alabama a huge victory. Doug Bird (5-0, 5.31) got the win.

Charlotte 5, Orlando 1. Erik Bedard (15-10, 3.14) won his 15th, going seven innings, striking out seven and was backed by two RBI apiece from Elmer Flick and Bill Nicholson as the Cougars kept pace with Alabama, staying two games back.

Western League South

Phoenix 5, San Antonio 4. Sid Gordon hit two homers - his 8th and 9th - off Roy Oswalt (11-12, 3.89) and Phoenix survived a Stallions rally in the ninth to hold on. Ken Chase (13-12, 4.57) battled control problems and survived, allowing 14 baserunners in 6 ⅓ innings but only giving up two runs to earn the win. Jose Valverde got his 28th save.

New Orleans 4, Los Angeles 3. Willie Mays’ four-hit game put him in front in the batting race and in position for the triple crown, but couldn’t give Los Angeles the win. Rookie Bill Terry hit a bases-loaded double off Ron Guidry (10-11, 4.48) in the fourth and Jim O’Toole (14-9, 3.58) was good enough for New Orleans, who bounced back from last night’s rough loss and showed they don’t plan on fading away down the stretch.

Eastern League South

Alabama 3, Memphis 1. Denny LeMaster (15-9, 3.64) won his 15th of the season, allowing only one run on four hits over eight innings as the Slammers all but ended Memphis’ hope for a third straight division crown. Johnny Mize drove in a pair for Alabama against loser Ryan Dempster (8-13, 4.74). Ed Delahanty drove in the only Sounds run on the day.

Charlotte 4, Orlando 3. Josh Donaldson smacked his 11th homer of the season in the bottom of the 8th to break a 3-3 tie and keep the Cougars on Alabama’s heels. Donaldson had three hits and two RBI on the game, but Charlotte dealt with another pitching injury as starter Bruce Ruffin (12-7, 3.09) - a huge surprise this season - left in the fourth with a forearm strain. Rolando Arrojo was knocked around for three runs but Hoyt Wilhelm (10-6, 3.48) steadied the ship long enough to get the win and Bryan Harvey picked up save number 42. Elmer Smith drove in all three Orlando runs with a bases clearing triple off Arrojo in the sixth. Troy Percival took the loss following a solid outing from Juan Guzman, who allowed three runs over seven.

Western League South

San Antonio 2, Phoenix 0. Stephen Strasburg was very good. But Stubby Overmire was better, throwing seven shutout innings to improve to 14-11 on the season, and Greg Holland picked up his 20th save as Phoenix couldn’t get anything going, mustering only six hits. Strasburg (16-8, 3.59) allowed only four hits, three of them in the fourth in which the Stallions scored both their runs on RBIs from Tony Clark and Dale Mitchell.

New Orleans 7, Los Angeles 5. The Knights did it again, taking two out of three in Los Angeles to overcome another Willie Mays homer - his 36th - and keep the heat on both the Lightning and the Phoenix Stallions atop the division. Marcus Giles hit a 2-run shot off the struggling Koji Uehara in the top of the 9th, his 7th, to break a 5-5 tie in a back and forth affair. Brandon Morrow picked up his 8th win in relief of Tom Glavine, who allowed five runs over seven innings. Andy Pafko hit his 14th homer for Los Angeles.

Eastern League South

Charlotte 5, Orlando 4 (15 innings). The Cougars won their sixth straight, dealing Orlando their seventh straight loss in a thriller that saw them allow the tying run in the ninth but win the game when Doug Brocail (2-5, 3.02) walked home the winning run. Derrek Lee hit two homers, giving him 20 on the season, for Charlotte, while Ryan Braun drove in three and had four hits for Orlando. Jon Niese (5-1, 3.25) continued his strong relief work for Charlotte and earned the win with 3 ⅓ innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

Western League South

Phoenix 4, San Antonio 1 (10 innings). The kind of win that a championship team pulls off...after being stymied by Ken Heintzelman for eight innings, Phoenix tied it in the ninth with a Paul Blair SAC fly and won it when Jesse Barfield smashed a three-run double in the top of the 10th to make a winner out of Mike Moore (14-14, 3.98), who threw all 10 innings, allowing three hits on only 109 pitches.

Elsewhere in the ABL...
  • Denver's Ty Cobb stole his 60th base, becoming the first player in ABL history to reach that mark.

Eastern League South

Alabama 4, Orlando 3 (10 innings). Floyd Robinson’s two-out homer in the ninth - his 9th of the season - tied it and a wild pitch from loser Dick Bartell scored Jack Clements with the game-winner for Alabama. Vic Willis struck out 10 over eight innings, allowing three runs and came away with the no decision. Mike Henneman threw two scoreless innings to earn his 11th win in relief. Jason Giambi hit his ninth homer for Orlando.

Memphis 5, Charlotte 3. Josh Hamilton’s bases loaded double in the ninth off Frank Viola (7-5, 4.16) cleared the bases and game the Sounds a come from behind victory that Charlotte manager Bill Rigney will wish he had back if Charlotte falls short in its pursuit of Alabama for the division. Viola, starting for the first time since August 26th, danced his way through trouble all night but entered the 8th with a 3-2 lead. Rigney left him in, which was questionable, and stayed with him once the bases were loaded, which was inexcusable against Hamilton who despite a rough September now has 105 RBI on the season. Rob Dibble earned his third win in relief of Van Mungo (11-10, 3.63), who allowed two runs over seven innings.

Western League South

Phoenix 12, Los Angeles 4. The Scorpions take the opener of a huge three-game set in Los Angeles, scoring 10 runs from the fifth through the eighth innings. Phoenix got homers from Sam Crawford (9th) and Vada Pinson (2nd) and three hits and two RBI apiece from Boog Powell and Jim Gilliam to lead the attack. John Thomson (8-8, 3.91) earned the win, going 8 ⅓. Mark Melancon (5-4, 3.77) took the loss, allowing four runs in ⅓ of an inning as Phoenix assured itself it will leave Los Angeles in first place at the end of the series.

New Orleans 3, San Antonio 1. Eppa Rixey (13-9, 4.02) threw seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball and Matt Carpenter drove in all three Knights runs as New Orleans continues to hang in the race. Bill Donovan (8-12, 4.25) threw eight solid innings in the loss.

Eastern League South

Orlando 8, Alabama 3. Ryan Braun hit his 14th homer and Earl Smith hit his fourth, both two-run shots, as the Orcas got for Bruce Chen (3-3, 5.55) for six runs over six innings to knock off Alabama. Jason Giambi contributed a two-run single to back Ken Forsch (10-11, 4.60), who earned his first win since the deadline trade to Orlando from Portland. Harry Steinfeldt hit his fourth for Alabama.

Charlotte 8, Memphis 4. Dana Fillingim (5-3, 4.75) allowed one earned run over eight innings and Hoyt Wilhelm saved Bert Gallia from imploding in the ninth as Charlotte held on with a big win over the Sounds. Tim Wakefield (12-11, 3.95) labored through 6 ⅔ for Memphis. Ed Delahanty had three hits for Memphis in the loss to raise his league-leading average to .349.

Western League South
Los Angeles 6, Phoenix 0. A.J. Burnett (15-11, 3.65) threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings and Doc Ellis wrapped it up as the Lightning evened the three-game set at a game apiece. Danny Litwhiler hit his seventh homer and Willie Mays hit his 37th, tying the ABL record set last year by Omaha’s Willie McCovey. Mays is now five points ahead of Ty Cobb in the batting race (.332 to .327) in his pursuit of the triple crown. He’s up by six in homers and 20 in RBI.
New Orleans 5, San Antonio 4. Rookie Bill Terry’s eighth inning homer off Greg Holland (3-10, 3.38) - his fourth - broke a 4-4 tie and carried the Knights to another victory. John Smoltz (15-10, 4.38) picked up his 15th victory and Dave Boswell saved his third for New Orleans, who got two RBI from Mike Pagliarulo.

Eastern League South

Orlando 4, Alabama 3. A tough loss for the Slammers, who allowed a two-run shot from Jason Giambi in the 8th to tie it and an RBI single from Elmer Smith to give Orlando what proved to be the winning run. Alabama mustered only five hits on the game. Troy Percival won his eighth with two innings of perfect relief. Derek Lowe (11-10, 5.26) took the loss for Alabama.

Memphis 6, Charlotte 0. The Cougars were unable to take advantage of Alabama’s loss as Mike Hampton (16-10, 3.65) threw a complete game seven-hit shutout to outpitch Erik Bedard (15-11, 3.20), who allowed three runs over five innings. Chili Davis, fighting through an off season, hit his 12th homer for the Sounds.

Elsewhere in the ABL...

  • Chicago clinched the Eastern League North with a 4-3 win over New York.

Western League South
Los Angeles 4, Phoenix 2. CC Sabathia (12-7, 4.15) allowed two runs over seven innings, coming up big as the Lightning took two of three. After allowing runs in his previous three outings, Koji Uehara threw two scoreless innings to earn his 33rd save. Hack Wilson drove in a pair for Los Angeles. Frank Howard hit his 20th homer of the season for Phoenix, while Ken Chase (13-13, 4.59) took the loss.

San Antonio 6, New Orleans 2. San Antonio knocked around Jim Bunning (8-12, 4.55), led by homers from Tommy Leach (his seventh) and Morgan Ensberg (his first) to back Roy Oswalt (12-12, 3.83). Oswalt allowed two runs over seven innings of work.

Eastern League South

Alabama 12, Charlotte 4. The Slammers open up this huge three-game set with a statement win, ensuring they will close the series ahead of Charlotte. Albert Pujols and Jack Clements each homered - their 28th and 8th, respectively - and drove in four runs as Alabama rolled over Elmer Riddle - making his first start of the season thanks to injuries to Bruce Ruffin and Schoolboy Rowe. It didn’t go well, as he was knocked out in the fifth. Greg Maddux allowed one run over 7 ⅓ to earn his 12th win of the season.

Western League South

New Orleans 3, Phoenix 2. After besting Los Angeles’ Ron Guidry five days ago, Jim O’Toole (15-9, 3.55) went out and topped reigning Western League MVP Stephen Strasburg (16-9, 3.60), allowing two runs over seven innings, getting support in homers from Ralph Kiner (16) and Larry Doby (4). Strasburg threw well, allowing three runs over seven, striking out nine. But it wasn’t enough as the Knights made the most of the series opener in a playoff push that’s become an increasingly interesting story.

San Antonio 8, Los Angeles 6. The Stallions jumped on Jose Rosado (12-14, 4.41) with a four-run first and got a three-run homer from Jackie Robinson, his 19th, as they rolled over Los Angeles despite the Stallions hitting four more homers, including Willie Mays’ ABL-record setting 38th. Vlad Guerrero (18), Hack Wilson (21) and Danny Litwhiler (8) also homered. Stubby Overmire (15-11, 4.00) won his 15th, going 7 ⅓ for the victory. Al Worthington saved his fourth.

Elsewhere in the ABL...
The Portland Robins clinched the Western League North division with a 6-2 win over Omaha.

Eastern League South

Alabama 5, Charlotte 1. The Slammers got a complete game six-hitter from Denny LeMaster (16-9, 3.52), who struck out eight in putting Alabama up by 3 ½ and making tomorrow’s series finale pretty much a must win for the Cougars. Charlotte committed three errors, leading to two unearned runs off loser Al Hollingsworth (3-5, 4.63). Bobby Murcer’s great season continued with his 21st homer for Alabama.

Western League South

New Orleans 3, Phoenix 2. Eppa Rixey (14-9, 3.98) improved to 4-1 in September as the Knights do it to Phoenix again. Daniel Murphy had three hits and 3 RBI, including his eighth homer, and Brandon Morrow saved his 33rd. Mike Moore (14-15, 3.98) was good over seven innings, but not good enough. Sam Crawford drove in both Stallions runs. New Orleans is now a game out of first...but a half game behind Phoenix, because…

Los Angeles 4, San Antonio 2. Joe Adcock hit a three-run homer, his 18th, in the third inning off loser Ken Heintzelman (1-2, 3.19) and Ron Guidry (11-11, 4.38) made it stand up with seven innings of one run ball as the Lightning not only win but move into first place by a half game over Phoenix. Willie Mays had two hits and is now hitting .335, nine points ahead of Ty Cobb for the batting title.

Eastern League South

Charlotte 3, Alabama 2. Frank Viola (8-5, 4.01) threw eight innings of four-hit, two-run ball as Charlotte won a game it desperately needed. Oscar Gamble’s fifth inning SAC Fly off Vic Willis (14-13, 3.74) broke a 2-2 tie and Viola and Bryan Harvey, who earned his 43rd save, made it stand up. Charlotte wraps up the season with four games in Orlando. Alabama heads to Memphis for five games, one a makeup from an earlier rainout.

Western League South
San Antonio 5, Los Angeles 4. The Lightning’s three homers weren’t enough to offset a pair of homers from Jackie Robinson, who now has 22 and drove in three runs as well as the Stallions play spoiler. Bill Donovan (9-12, 4.24) went seven innings for the win and Greg Holland picked up his 21st save. Danny Litwhiler (9), Rick Burleson (6) and Andy Pafko (15) homered for Los Angeles in the loss.

New Orleans 8, Phoenix 7 (17 innings). If you are a believer in the New Orleans Knights’ September rally, this game is your reward. Phoenix led 3-1 going into the bottom of the 8th after seven innings of one-run ball from John Thomson. But New Orleans scratched across a run in the 8th and Matt Carpenter hit his seventh homer of the season with one out in the ninth against Jose Valverde to tie it and send it to extras. The Scorpions scored three in the top of the 11th but Trea Turner hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the 11th off Diego Segui - Turner’s sixth homer of the season - the tie it again. When Phoenix scored in the top of the 14th, Harry Heilmann answered in the bottom of the 14th with an RBI double to knot the score for a third time. Then with two outs in the bottom of the 17th, Heilmann - the face of the Knights since inception and a somewhat forgotten man in the ABL due to New Orleans’ struggles, hit an RBI single off Juan Berenguer to score Milt May for his fifth hit of the game and the walkoff win in front of 38,432 - who pretty much all stayed for the 6 hour, 42 minute affair that gave New Orleans, incredibly, a series sweep and a share of first place. New Orleans closes at home against Los Angeles, while Phoenix hosts San Antonio.
