Waiver Wire Question

In MLB, when a player is on waivers, at what point in real-life does a team learn if and by whom a player is claimed?

In an OOTP league we can see who claims a player and in essence block a claim by also claiming (if in the proper position) or we can trade our player elsewhere for next to nothing if we would prefer the player to go to a different team.

In MLB, do teams know if a player is claimed prior to the point that his waiver period is complete?

Thanks for any insight into this aspect of waiver claims.

Good question. Here's a couple of sites that I simply googled to explain waivers. I thought I had a handle on this until I read the info on these sites. It appears it's three days, but I'll let you read the rules and judge for yourself. Hope this helps some!

Here's another explanation:

When a player is placed on waivers then all the MLB clubs have 3 days in which to claim said player. Clubs are given preference according to their current record, the team having the worst current record being given preference over teams with better records. At the commencement of the 3-day waiving period, the team with the worst record, assuming they have also claimed the player, is given rights to said player (IOW: if the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Astros all try to claim the same player, the team who has the worst record at the commencement of that players waiver period is awarded the rights to said player). The waiving team now has several days to either arrange a trade with the claiming team, pull the player off of waivers and opt to keep him, or release him outright to the claiming team. In the event that the waiving team opts to outright release the player, then the claiming team has no choice but to accept the claimed player and incur any renaming salary costs on his contract.

If no team has opted to claim the player by the end of the 3-day waiver period, then, and only then, is a player considered to have "cleared waivers." Clearing waivers means that the waiving team has successfully passed the player they wish to move through the waiver wire WITHOUT the interference of a claiming team.

Once a player has cleared waivers then his team can decide what to do with him; the team can either keep the player in their minor league system, or they can release him outright into free-agency. In the event the player is released outright, his team will be forced to pay a portion of his remaining contract.

I think the OP's question was do teams know who else has already submitted a claim, or are the claims "blind". In one of the articles I found it mentioned that teams basically go to a website and click a button to submit a claim...but there weren't details as to whether or not they had visibility into who else may have already clicked "claim".
