I actually like reading some of the storylines but then again age may be making me soft in the head. I am using the other stories to check for fictional players that annoyingly are sneaking into the league. When found they automatically put on the rack and then terminated (deleted), any ideas on how fictionals are sneaking in to my league? Is there an easy way to detect the infiltration of the vermin?

Great thing is Rivera is coming into the league during the real life Rich Gossage years.....hey kids get off my lawn will get a true test. Of course, as the OOTP Gods would have it Gossage entered my league in 1952. He is 37 years old and unemployed. Loving the hometown Captains getting Billy Wagner.
I'll be particularly curious to see how things go for Mo and Billy Wagner. In my main (and first) OOTP project- taking over the Colorado Rockies at the beginning of their inaugural season- I have had both Rivera and Wagner on my team, with very different results. I was thrilled when I got Mo with, as I recall (at work right now), the 9th pick in the first round of the draft. But in the several seasons I had him on my team, only one of those was truly Mo-like. And a few were pretty darn bad. Granted, we play our home games at Coors Field, but with his extreme ground ball tendencies and with our very fine infield defense, I really thought he would excel. A season or two before I let Mo go, I was able to get Wagner in a trade. This past season (2003) he was N.L. Reliever-of-the-Year with 48 saves and an ERA of 1.78 (other stats not at my fingertips at the moment.) And this season, which I will be wrapping up tonight (up to 09/19/2004) he is almost as good: 33 saves, 2.21 ERA. My recollection is that he has something approaching 12 K per 9 IP and about 2.4 BB per 9. Mo has done a bit better since leaving the Rockies (in my little universe) but really shows no signs of rising to GOAT status or of making it to the HOF.

How is your Game Settings > League Settings > Rules > Amateur Draft Settings page set up? You must check BOTH the "Enable Amateur Draft" and "Disable automatic Creation of Free Agents and Fictional Draft Class" boxes in order to both have a draft and ensure non of those fictional maggots get into it or get created as free agents.

Mo wasn't really Mo in my random debut either. He only won his award (Reliever of the Year) once, and finished in the top three another two times. Perplexing to say the least.

Right now Mo is starting and not very well. Thinking that will end by the end of the season.

I've always been a big fan of Rivera but I must admit that there was a lot swearing being done by me at my sim Mo. Billy Wagner, on the other hand, who I liked well enough IRL, has become one of my favorites in my little OOTP universe. (Another sad result for one of my favorites is what has befallen the Big Hurt in this alternate reality. He was every bit the Frank Thomas you would expect while with the White Sox but then the Dodgers signed him as a free agent prior to the 1998 season and he never had more than 194 plate appearances in a season since. And he hasn't been particularly injury prone. In fact, the majority of his injury history is prior to joining the Dodgers. They just couldn't seem to figure out what to do with him. I was heartened a bit when he was finally traded to the Pirates in the most recent off season ('03-'04) but it's a little bit too late and he really needed to go to an A.L. team at this point. 2004 season winding down and Thomas has 159 PA, is hitting .264/.409/.480 with 3 doubles and 8 HR. At age 36 the indications are that he is a possible (borderline) HOF'er, but certainly no sure thing.)

I've found that in general the top closers don't perform to expectations in OOTP. Admittedly don't know why or if that's just my own experience.

I don't have "Enable Amateur Draft" Checked. My first Amateur draft turned out OK. I had it in December at the end of my first season. Prior to that I had only had the Inaugural Draft.

But I think I should enable it when the pre-season starts. Do you agree?

Both boxes should be checked as I indicated in my post above. You can only do so in the preseason, so make sure you do it between late January/early February (whenever the preseason starts).

The manual recommends holding the Amateur Draft for historical leagues in October or November. So I am setting the date in November. I will check the "Enable Amateur Draft" box during preseason.

That changed in OOTP18 I think. Manual is quite far behind.

When you you recommend holding it?

Those settings are correct in my league, what does "Use pre-defined draft value for AI" do to the draft? I have never used that setting. Just moved the draft from 15 Dec to 15 Nov because it supposedly can cause other problems with the draft class. I was lucky I am still in my 1914 preseason. My settings are getting closer to my "perfect" random debut league (he says with his fingers crossed). The thing that I am now thinking of is setting all the stats and freezing to a year as you do, undecided but I am trying to think the idea through, too many decisions!!!!!

Right now I more confused then ever. So many people have different opinions; which is to be expected. I am keeping my draft at December 15th because it worked! Other stuff I'm still thinking about.

I am going to start 1914 to see if I can find anymore mistakes, this is a "trial" setup, if I can get as close to my idea of right I am going to restart it in 19 after the first couple of updates to the new version. So the clock is ticking.....

I wish it wasn't so confusing. One of the problems with the December 15th date is that free agents file around the middle of November, so those that have draft pick compensation attached to them might sign sometime in the month between the free agent filings and the draft. Goodness knows what kind of borking that would do to your draft, but surely it can't be good.

If financials are turned off wouldn't that solve that problem?

Well if financials are off there will be no need for free agent compensation. I personally turn free agent compensation off. I have a 5 round draft and have the game import 5 rounds worth of players only.

I have a 16-team league and do a draft of 100 players. 5 rounds plus 20 guys into the FA pool (or who get signed as FA's and other guys get dumped).

*Headslap* Yessir I think you're right about that. I guess if financials are turned off, your game won't have free agency.
