All I can say is "do it".
There may have been a version or two in there that I missed, but I've been around since OOTP baseball, and I've always played fictional, or started current day, and played it forward, that's just how I played the game. 18 was the first time that I went back to play historical, and it was an absolute amazing experience. Like you, I think maybe I hit an age (44) where I'd spent so many years as a fan, that in some ways it was a stroll down memory lane. I actually started in 1969, because of Ball Four, and I wanted to see how the Seattle Pilots did, and how Jim Bouton would fare. I followed Bill Lee's career because of The Wrong Stuff, and then I started getting into the era where I fell in love with baseball. I got a second walk down memory lane, I enjoyed the '83 and '86 seasons for sure ('83 because that was the first time I came close to having completed set of Topps baseball cards, and '86 because I had the complete set of Fleer cards.) I got a whole new look at players who I thought were good (and just had an outstanding year, and did not happen again) and a reminder of how truly talented some forgotten players really were. Eric Davis on the mid 80's Reds anyone? I'm not sure that I'll do it again in '19, because I'm not sure how many times I'd enjoy it, but for someone who grew up on baseball, and have enjoyed OOTP for so many years, I'm just surprised that it took me that long to play a historical. It brought back a host of fond memories, and might have been the best OOTP experience I've ever had. This year? Online...again, something I've never done, and I suspect will absolutely hook me. But historical? I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the sport. Don't hesitate, do it! -Cheers |

I've never played fictional, but I was starting to tire of historical a few versions back...Then historical random debut came out. Haven't looked back. Love it.

I'm the opposite of most on this forum, I only play historical. I keep meaning to try a fictional league, but i've just never pulled the trigger.

Wanna know my fictional strategy? Get all the best players on your team then go around the league and kick the crap out of everybody!

That is one way I have never played this game. But thinking about it I would love to play out the 1993 season. I've been a Yankee fan since birth but I was living near Philly at the time and I got caught up in the excitement of that year. I went to a bunch of games during the season.
I still remember most of the guys on that team. Daulton, Eisenreich, Incaviglia.. and I would like to save Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams some grief by beaning Joe Carter instead of pitching to him and letting him hit his HR. |
