Congratulations to the person who wrote the e mail salary discussion routine

I'm getting some fun out of the e mails from this free agent.

Late 90s. Typical superstar salary according to league data is $5.3 million. When I had him under contract he wanted 8 years at $8 million each. Now he is down to 7 and 7, But the emails that come back. I can almost imagine backspacing the profanities out and rewriting it. Oh, and he wants an additional $450,000 for winning the Cy Young.

He's a four star SP but in addition to the above he's 30 years old, has been on the DL with an elbow ligament problem, and has another 2 months on the DL. I last offered him $4 x 2 plus $3 for winning the Cy Young.

He's very popular but I don't want to take a chance on this guy. Just enjoying the e mail responses.

Forgot to mention second year was team option in that offer.

So I kept playing with the situation to see the e mail responses.

Stunned when about Feb 10 I got a signed contract two years at $4 million each plus $1 million for Cy Young.

My biggest concern with these emails, however, is that there isn't enough variety in them - especially when it comes to minor league contracts.

There's only one acceptance email for MiLCs, and it hasn't been changed in ten years.

Further congratulations to whoever wrote the negotiating program.

So eventually I took off team option for second year and cut the Cy Young bonus to $1 million. That resulted in two years at $4 each plus the Cy Young bonus.

About Feb 10, with still another two months on the DL, he signed. Would be interesting to know what the AI GMs offered if anything.

becareful of those mvp/cy young bonuses... tehy don't help nearly as much as you think and in the unlucky chance he wins it's even more expensive for you than me...

i don't like a 1-2M bonus on a 20M contract, let alone 3M on a 4M contract.

i bet ~100k/year is worth more latitude than a big bonus... definitely built in negligible returns because you can't abuse them with any large effect.

even after you get them to change # of years after a couple unsuccessful and close attempts, you can typically still do the longer-term #'s with a bit cut off as usual. (if that's still a preference)... the other way doens't work as well... when they initially demand max years, you can't offer more than 1-2 less until they change their tune.

If he won the Cy I would have paid $5 million for that year. I figure winning the Cy would have been an $8 million performance.

I also figured the most likely outcome was a reasonable effective SP with the possible downside being throwing away $8 million over two years.
