Some Statistical Additions
I think there are a handful of statistics that could be added to OOTP that are improvements on what we currently have.
One example is SIERA, and we can throw xFIP in there too. The game seems to be largely based on FIP (at least WAR is) and I think xFIP and SIERA are good improvements on it. xFIP improves upon FIP by replacing the pitcher's homerun total with the number of homeruns they should've given up based on the number of fly balls allowed. This is good because HR/FB% can fluctuate pretty dramatically due to luck and it takes roughly 400 fly balls to get a good sample size to determine if the pitcher varies from league average or not. SIERA then improves upon both by not ignoring balls in play. For example, high strikeout pitchers generate weaker contact on average (and lower BABIP) and have lower homerun rates. This could be accurately modeled into the game (as stuff goes up, HRs go down). Needless to say, for all this to be possible more batted ball data would have to be tracked. Would love to see GB%, LD%, and FB% make it into the game as well. With the advent of Statcast, there's only going to be more data provided in this area and OOTP can build on that. |
