National Collegiate Federation
In the fall of 1896, eight colleges in the United States joined together to create the National Collegiate Baseball Federation. The schools were looking for athletic competition that fell in-line with their mission of academic excellence. They decided that baseball would be played once a week - on Saturdays - in order to ensure that their athletes would truly be student-athletes.
This is their story. The NCBF is a follow-on to another dynasty that I did around a baseball version of a Major Junior hockey league. I received significant inspiration from NYY #23's Any Given Sunday dynasty, right down to the one-game per week schedule. The basic settings are:
I have planned for expansion to be done in the future, but there will be three structural constants to keep me interested and not worried about losing steam when trying to deal with updating schedule files:
Next, the schools in the league's inaugural division: the Atlantic Baseball League. |

Atlantic Baseball League
The first group of teams to form what will be the National Collegiate Baseball Federation were the member schools of the Atlantic Baseball League:
College of Diplomacy Ambassadors (Washington, DC) Dover State Rams (Dover, DE) Empire State Hawks (New York, NY) Holland University Blues (Peekskill, NY) Hudson Tech Chargers (New York, NY) Lord Baltimore University Clippers (Baltimore, MD) Schuykill University Hawks (Lower Merion, PA) Virginia Maritime Academy Cannons (Norfolk, VA) During this dynasty, I will be helming the Schuykill Hawks. |

1898 Schuykill Preview
Schuykill Hawks 1898 Preview
1897 Recap With a one game lead heading into the penultimate weekend of the 1897 season, Schuykill collapses, losing their last two and ending up in third place. Sophomore Pete Soto carried the load as the starting pitcher, appearing in all 14 games with 13 starts. He struck out 32 batters over 97.1 IP and finished as the runner-up in balloting for the league's Outstanding Pitcher. Leading the hitters was junior first basemen Bill Clark, who finished the campaign with a .400/.422/.550 triple slash and drove in a league-high 15 runs. Frosh SS Calvin Leonard chipped in with a .358/.393/.528 triple slash, but committed an unsightly 14 errors. Catcher Steve Gordon led the team with six extra base hits. Key Losses The biggest loss was senior OF and captain Roy O'Hagerty, who finished third on the club with 18 hits. In total, the team returns eight players who started at least eight games in 1897. New Additions Three newcomers have made the active roster, with another promising prospect being held in reserve this coming season. Alec Boyd, a junior from Philadelphia, joins the team after transferring from Raritan University. Boyd has a solid bat and will play a number of roles as a utility infielder and pinch hitter this season. Speedy freshman OF Wilbert Ferris comes to the team from Easton, PA. He has significant upside as a future lead-off hitter for the Hawks, but will spend the 1898 season as a pinch-runner. Freshman Chris Long comes to Schuykill from Avon Lake, OH. He has good hands in the infield, and may end up competing with Calvin Leonard at shortstop if the incumbent Leonard continues his poor fielding. Long offers limited upside with the bat, but has very good speed that could factor in in the late innings. Finally, Pottsville, PA native Don White is a potential weapon out of the bullpen this year. But, with a strong stable of returning pitchers, White will probably spend most of the season on the bench. Starting Lineup Skipper Donnie Gallego will most likely start the following lineup when they open play on March 19 at Holland. Quote:
Outlook Early predictions have Schuykull competing with defending champion Dover State for league supremacy this year. The five seniors in key roles will need to lead the way for a super-talented underclass contingent. Best guess for 1898: 9-5 and league champs. |

1898 Atlantic League Predictions
While snow still calls on the campuses of the Atlantic League's member schools, the spring semester has started and players have arrived back on campus ready for the beginning of exciting 1898 baseball season.
The early predictions have last year's last place finisher Holland reversing fortunes. Diplomacy, Hudson Tech and Schuykill are thought to be right on their heels. Virginia Maritime - buoyed by Dover State transfer and 1897 Most Outstanding Hitter Angel Berroa - is in a group right behind them along with Empire State. Because of high roster turnover, Lord Baltimore and Dover State, who played a 15th game to decide the league champion in 1897, could be doormats this season. One thing I've noticed is that there is significant roster turnover - more so than I've seen in previous versions of playing a similar style league. I'll have to keep an eye on it. |

The game was knotted at four headed into the ninth inning. Leading off for Schuykill, Calvin Leonard notched a line drive single. Four errors led to two unearned run and spoiled the first home game of the year for the Schuykill Hawks. Empire State took a 2-1 decision over the hosts. It was an unseasonably warm day with clear skies and temperatures climbing above 80 degrees. A stiff wind was blowing in, keeping fly balls down.

Steve Gordon helped out on defense, throwing out three runners attempting to steal. Bill Clark had a pair of hits for Schuykill, while Alec Boyd, Bill Meeks and Keith Green all pitched in with singles. Empire State was led by pitcher Cal Hunter, who threw a complete game, scattering five hits and adding a double. Next Up Schuykill heads to DC to take on Diplomacy. 1898 Week 4
Down 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Schuykill staged an improbable rally to knock off Lord Baltimore, 5-4. Lord Baltimore had scored twice in the top of the last inning to take a 3-run lead over the homestanding Hawks, but David Newell could not hold off a furious rally.
Bill Clark had an infield single to lead off the ninth inning. He advanced to second when Wilbert Ferris drew a four pitch walk. With Norm Ellis batting, Clark and Ferris stole third and second, respectively. Ellis would complete his at bat with a walk. After an Alec Boyd popout and a Bruce Potter fielders choice ground ball to nail Clark at home, Calvin Leonard drove Ferris and Ellis home with a single. On the throw home, Potter smartly advanced to third, while Leonard ended up at second. With two outs and the game-tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, skipper Donnie Gallego when to the bench and had Keith Green pinch hit for pitcher Pete Soto. After fouling off the first pitch, the senior poked a ground ball up the middle, scoring both runners without a throw. David Newell went the distance for Lord Baltimore, walking three and striking out zero; all five runs were earned. Jose Valera led the way for the Clippers hitters, with three singles, scored three times and added a pair of stolen bags. For the Hawks, Pete Soto threw a complete game, giving up three earned runs and striking out five. Bill Meeks joined Clark with two hits. while Leonard and Green drove in two runners a piece. Up Next Schuykill goes to New York to play winless Hudson Tech. Lord Baltimore returns home to face high-scoring Holland. Elsewhere Holland used a five-run 6th to take down visiting Hudson Tech 10-6. 1898 Week 5
Coach Donnie Gallego used all 14 of his position players - and 17 in all - as Schuykill beat Hudson Tech 13-7. The visiting Hawks scored the first 10 runs of the game, but defensive miscues allowed the Chargers to get themselves back into it by cutting the score after the 6th to 12-7. Pat Perez and Bob Nagle came in in relief and shut the door on the Hudson Tech comeback.
Schuykill was led by Calvin Leonard's four hits, five RBI's and two runs scored. Leonard also committed his first error of the season today - a marked improvement from last year's 14 errors in 14 games mark. Bill Meeks and Pete Soto added three hits apiece, while Daniel Hargrove, Steve Gordon and Bill Clark all added two hits each. Jacob Griggs took the loss for Hudson Tech, giving up 10 runs, only two of which were earned. Four Hudson Tech hitters knocked two hits each - Fedor Bairov, Billy Lane, Jose Diaz, and Don Pierce. Combined, the first three hitters in the Chargers lineup outhit their opponents, going 6-14 with 4 RBI's and 3 runs scored. The visiting Schuykill hitters combined for a 4-14 day with three runs scored and one RBI. Next Up Schuykill gets a visit from Virginia Maritime. Hudson Tech tries to get in the win column against cross-borough rival Empire State. Elsewhere Diplomacy used a five-run 5th inning to roll past Empire State 8-1. Dover State broke Melvin Cunningham's 19-inning shutout streak with four runs in the first as the Rams knocked off Virginia Maritime 8-2. Holland continues its high-scoring start with a 7-0 trouncing of Lord Baltimore. |

1898 Week 6
Virginia Maritime capitalized on four errors in the 8th and 9th innings to come back from a 2-1 deficit and beat Schuykill 5-2. The damage all occurred with two outs, costing the Hawks a chance to get closer in the race for the Atlantic League crown.
In the top of the eighth and trailing by a run, an error by CF Bill Meeks let pitcher Melvin Cunningham reach base for the visiting Cannons. With two outs and Cunningham on first, Pete Soto dropped an easy groundball, allowing Cunningham to get to second. Soto got to two strikes on the next hitter, who then popped a fly ball to right that Daniel Hargrove dropped, allowing Cunningham to score the tying run. It got worse for the Schuykill defense in the ninth. With a runner on second, Calvin Leonard dropped an easy ground ball, allowing the go ahead runner to get to third with no outs. Virginia Maritime would go on to score three in the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Schuykill could only draw one walk. Pete Soto threw eight innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out four with zero walks. Steve Gordon notched three singles for Schuykill, while Norm Ellis and Keith Green each added two hits. Daniel Hargrove continues his hitting struggles, and is now 2-21 on the year. Next Up Schuykill heads down to Dover State to face the Rams. Virginia Maritime has a road trip up to New York to face Hudson Tech. Elsewhere Holland blitzed Dover State 8-0 as Casey Rouse threw his second straight complete game shutout. Hudson Tech scored two in the top of the ninth to win their first game of the year, 6-4 over rival Empire State. 1898 Week 7
The 1898 season reached its mid-point with Schuykill suffering another heartbreaking loss. Playing on the road against Dover State, the Hawks had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the 7th, only to have the Rams claw back to tie the ball game.
The teams then exchanged zeros until the bottom of the 12th when Pat Perez was unable to retire any of the four Dover State batters he faced. With the 5-4 Dover State win, the two clubs both have 3-4 records on the season. Bill Meeks led the way for Schuykill, notching three hits, scoring two times and driving in a run. Harry Cook and Keith Green both added two hits each. Next Up Schuykill hosts Holland in a return of the Hawks' season-opening win. Dover State hosts Diplomacy as they try to stop the Ambassadors. Elsewhere Carl Middleton continues to dominate as Diplomacy held back Holland 6-1. It took 16 innings, but Empire State defeated Lord Baltimore 6-5. Hudson Tech won a second consecutive game, 8-7, over Virginia Maritime. Standings Diplomacy leads the lead with a 6-1 record. They are a game up on 5-2 Empire and two up on Holland. Three teams are three games back and tied at 3-4 on the season: Dover State, Schuykil and Virginia Maritime. Hudson Tech and Lord Baltimore are both 2-5. |

1898 Season End
The post-game wrap ups were taking me out of the flow I was taking with the team. With a 14-game schedule, it is easy to get into a flow with a team and want to ride it. And boy, did the 1898 Schuykill Hawks go on a run. In my last update, the team was 3-4 through half of the season. The team went on a 6 game winning streak to put themselves in a tie for the league lead going into the last weekend of the season. In total, three schools were tied for the lead on the final weekend: Holland, Diplomacy and Schuykill.
Schuykill was hosting defending champions Dover State, who were eliminated, but had a 7-6 record, good for fourth in the circuit. Down in Washington, Diplomacy was hosting Holland. If Schuykill won, they would face the winner of the Holland/Diplomacy game for the crown. If they lost, the winner of that game would be champion. On a cool late spring day on the Philadelphia Main Line, seniors poured their hearts out on both sides of the diamond as they competed. One team wanted to spoil the others title chances. And, they did. In heartbreaking fashion, Dover State won 7-5 in 13 innings to ruin Schuykill’s championship hopes. Through 49 plate appearances, the visiting Rams held the host Hawks to eight hits and four walks. In the bottom of the ninth, down by a run, senior 1B Bill Clark showed the Hawks heart as he plowed through a catcher to score the game tying run. But it was not enough, as the team succumbed in extra innings. Afterwards, captain Jason King refused to talk with the media as the heart wrenching loss was etched on his face. In Washington, Holland took a 4-1 decision over Diplomacy, led by pitcher Casey Rouse’s complete game. Holland jumped from finishing last in 1897 to winning the league in 1898. Based on tiebreakers, Diplomacy finished second, followed by Schuykill. Dover State and Empire State tied at 8-6, followed by Virginia Maritime at 6-8. Hudson Tech finished in seventh with a very strange year: they lost the first five games, won the next four, then closed out the season with five losses in a row. Lord Baltimore finished last, with 12 consecutive losses. |
