One-Pitch or Full-Pitch Mode

For the longest time I've been playing OOTP games in One-Pitch Mode until recently. I went back to Full-Pitch Mode and it felt more realistic to me. There were times when the opposing team would bring in a new pitcher or a pinch-hitter and I didn't feel prepared for a switch or stealing bases and bunting didn't feel right in One-Pitch Mode. In situations like that, I would go back temporarily to Full-Pitch Mode and then switch it back to One-Pitch. Going forward, I'm going to play all games in Full-Pitch Mode because that's what works for me. You might prefer the other way, but it also adds to the tension and excitement for me.

Which do you prefer?

Do you mean pitch by pitch mode?

I prefer pitch-by-pitch mode as it allows for more strategy but...it takes time...so I find myself mostly playing in single pitch mode the vast majority of time. It's great that we have the choice.

I typically play one-pitch unless it is a situation where the count may matter in your decision making (ex - hit and run, 2-out steal). I agree with you than the depth of managing is a good bit more playing out every pitch, just a matter of time.

Curious, how long does it take you to play out a game? For one-pitch, I can typically do a full game in 15-25 minutes (I do keep a simple scorecard when playing, or it would be quicker).

I play a little differently...

I play pitch-by-pitch mode, but if it's a situation with no one on, I just hit the space bar and simulate the at bat. If I have a base stealer on or if there is a base stealer on while I'm pitching, I actually do pitch by pitch.

This is a great idea. I can't believe I haven't thought of it. It hadn't come into play for me until recently because I had a bunch of slow pokes but my lineup has evolved into having a couple of really good base stealers in it.

That is a good idea. I play one-pitch but I would like it if one-pitch stopped in a few more situations.

Yeah, I've tried a bunch of different ways and this is the best marriage of getting a game through quickly, but still seeing the game and having ultimate control of strategy

Thanks Rosco! I've been playing for many years and never realized this was of playing. For some reason I thought pitch-by-pitch had to be all or nothing. The ability to auto-sim most at bats, but go to pitch-by-pitch in important situations is great!

Finding less time to play I still use mostly methods already spoken off.
Pitch-by-pitch when someone is on base and sometimes in the 8th inning and onwards if the game is close. Else I tend to use one-pitch mode.
I do let the AI/manager handle defense but the pitcher is "mine" if needed to by pulled from the game.

In pitch-by-pitch mode I still would have liked to "upgrade" the game as much as possible in the importance of what type of pitch "normally" induce different kind of results. Don't think the game really excel on how different type of pitches results in very typical outcome.
Guess you all understand what I trying to say. We all second guess pitches and results watching the game IRL.

Perhaps even a "value" on the pitcher not only quality of certain pitches but how often he uses the different types. The deadly "out-pitch" using a nasty curve (or other) after several fastballs. More emphasis of the well known lefty-vs-lefty specialist.

In short the "magic" of pitching could be enhanced a lot more IMHO.
Or should I say more smart selecting of pitches and of course more of the outcome they "normally" result in.
Perhaps (I do hope) the game have evolved in this over the years but not that has been very obvious.
Beside being a game of numbers, it's still a brain/guessing battle between the pitcher and the batter.

I feel like using pitch-by-pitch mode just increases the edge I have over the AI so I use one pitch. Also I grew up on games like Strat-O-Matic and Pursuit the Pennant which are basically "one pitch mode".
