In the bottom of the fifth, Broberg struck out Petrocelli for his 20th K of the season.

Three walks and the Rangers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth. Bobby Bolin replaced Seibert on the mound for the Red Sox. An error allowed the Rangers to avoid the shutout. Maddox then got his first hit of the season, a 2-run single. Roger Moret replaced Bolin on the mound with runners on the corners and two out. He walked pinch hitter Tom Grieve to load the bases and then walked Suarez to make it a one run game. Another error tied the game before Nelson grounded out to retire the side. The Rangers had a 5-run eighth with just 1 hit in the innning.

Bill Gogolewski took the mound for Texas in the bottom of the eighth as rain began to fall. It didn't fall long. An error gave the Red Sox the lead back. Griffin then hit an RBI triple for Boston's 10th hit of the game. Griffin injured himself sliding into third and was replaced by Ben Oglivie.

The Rangers were held to just 3 hits the entire game.

The Rangers are in Detroit for three. The Tigers swept the three games in Texas in April. Detroit leads the league in batting average, OBP and home runs and is second in the league in runs scored. The Tigers are last in the league in bullpen ERA and have the fewest stolen bases in the league. Since the Texas sweep, Detroit has lost 4 out of 5.

The Texas Rangers will open the season on April 6th at home against the Kansas City Royals.
I noticed that Baseball reference had their first game as:

Saturday, April 15, 1972
Texas Rangers (0) @ California Angels (1)

And the teams didn't play 162 games either.

So I looked it up and found:

1972 was affected by a players' strike over pension and salary arbitration. The strike erased the first week and a half of the season, and the Leagues decided to just excise the lost portion of the season with no makeups.
As a result, an uneven number of games were lost by each team; some as few as six, some as many as nine.
The lack of makeups, even when they affected the playoffs, led to the Boston Red Sox losing the American League East by half a game to the Detroit Tigers.

1972 marked the first year for the Texas Rangers, who had moved to Arlington from Washington, D.C. (where they played as the Washington Senators) after the 1971 season.
The team was one of the worst ever fielded by the franchise, losing 100 games for the first time since 1964. Manager Ted Williams hated it in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and resigned at the end of the season.
To make room for the Rangers in the American League West Division, one of the teams already in that division would have to switch to the East Division.
Technically, both the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers were the easternmost teams in the West Division, but only one of them could move.
It was decided that Milwaukee, as the newer franchise, would make the move.
The Brewers and White Sox would again become divisional rivals in 1994 with the formation of the American League Central, but this would last only through 1997,
when Milwaukee transferred to the National League.

Yes the 54-100 real life record threw me off too but researching it and I learned the same thing you did about the labor dispute and uneven season.

Cash tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a single that gave him his 10th RBI of the season. A walk loaded the bases with nobody out. But the Tigers would get no more.

After six: Texas 1 Detroit 1.

In the top of the seventh, Joe Niekro replaced Phoebus with runners at the corners and one out. Mason was thrown out at home trying to score on a Nelson flyout.

A Mason throwing error in the bottom of the seventh gave the Tigers the lead. With a runner on second and one out, Mike Garman replaced Kobel on the mound and he ended the inning without any more damage.

John Hiller took the mound for the Tigers in the top of the eighth. The Rangers loaded the bases with one out. But could not get the tying run in.

The Rangers could only get a man to first in the top of the ninth.

Boom! Before even the first out of the game was made, Burroughs had himself a 3-run homer. And one out later, the Tigers were already into their bullpen as Cain complained of arm pain and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Earl Stephenson.

Freehan answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

After three: Texas 3 Detroit 1.

In the top of the fourth, the Rangers had runners at first and second and two out when Fred Holdsworth made his first appearance of the season. Nelson singled to load the bases but Maddox lined out to right to retire the side.

In the bottom of the fifth, three walks loaded the bases for the Tigers with one out. Driessen drew walk number four of the innning to bring home a run. Mason booted a ball and the score was tied. A popout and strikeout ended the innning.

Holdsworth struck out the side in the top of the sixth.

Cash led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run and the Tigers had the lead. Kaline added a 2-run shot.

After six: Detroit 6 Texas 3.

The Rangers had runners at first and second with one out and Joe Niekro replaced Holdsworth on the mound for the Tigers and kept the Rangers from scoring.

Paul Lindblad took the mound for the Rangers in the bottom of the seventh.

After a horrible April, Lindblad has gotten his ERA to drop below 7.0.

In the top of the ninth, the Rangers loaded the bases with nobody out as a Burroughs single gave the Rangers 10 hits for the game. John Hiller replaced Niekro on the mound. And the Rangers scored nothing.

The Rangers begin a stretch of 15 games in 14 days as they visit Milwaukee for a 2-game series against the Brewers. Texas took 2 out of 3 at home against Milwaukee in the last weekend of April. The Brewers loss to Kansas City on Sunday ended a 5-game win streak. The Brewers have the second best bullpen ERA in the league. Only two teams in the league have allowed fewer runs than Milwaukee. Only one team in the league has fewer stolen bases than the Brewers.

The Rangers return home for their first 4-game series of the season as they face Oakland for the first time this season. The preseason favorites to win the West, the Athletics sit at .500 after last night's win ended a 4-game losing streak. While ranking in the top three in runs scored, they are not a good team in terms of batting average. In fact, the only team in the league that is worse is the Rangers. But only one team in the league has more stolen bases than Oakland.

In the top of the seventh, the Twins had a runner on first and two out and Paul Lindblad replaced Broberg on the mound. Killebrew then gave the Twins the lead back with a 2-run homer.

Linblad started the top of the eighth by striking out Darwin for his 10th K of the season.

Dave LaRoche came on to pitch for the Twins in the bottom of the eighth.

Rain began to fall in the bottom of the ninth. But it stopped almost as soon as it started. The Twins fifth error of the game gave the Rangers a chance as the tying run was on second but Biittner flew out to end the game.

Final score: Minnesota 3 Texas 2.

The best team in the American League is in the Lone Star State! For two days. The Royals visit Texas. Kansas City's loss in the second game of the double header yesterday ended an 8 game winning streak. The Royals lead the league in runs scored, batting average and OBP. Only one team has hit more home runs than Kansas City and only two teams have more stolen bases. However, only one team in the league has a worse defensive efficiency. The two teams met in Kansas City in early April and the Royals swept the three game series.

The first run of the game was unearned as the Royals cashed in a throwing error with a Mayberry RBI single in the top of the first.

Burroughs singled in the bottom of the first to extend his hit streak to 11 games.

After three: Kansas City 1 Texas 0.

Oliver led off the top of the fourth with a home run. With a runner on first and two out, the Rangers went to the bullpen real early and brought in Danny Fife.

After six: Kansas City 2 Texas 0.

Fife brought his ERA from above 7.0 to below 4.0 but left the game with one out in the top of the eighth after injuring his elbow. Mike Garman took the mound for the Rangers in his place.

Howard has been abysmal with a .133 batting average but he led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run to prevent the shutout. But that would be all the Rangers would get.

Final score: Kansas City 2 Texas 1.

In the bottom of the first, Burroughs singled to stretch his hitting streak to 12 games. He is now hitting .323 on the season, looking to be the first Ranger to hit .300.

After three: Kansas City 0 Texas 0.

Rojas put the Royals on the board with an RBI double in the top of the fourth. Kirkpatrick added an RBI single.

The bottom of the fourth ended with Fitzmorris striking out Mason for his 10th K of the season.

The Royals loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth. But failed to add to their lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Rangers got runners on the corners with one out. The Royals made a pitching change and brought in Bruce Dal Canton. Howard grounded one to third but beat out the double play, allowing Biittner to score from third.

After six: Kansas City 2 Texas 1.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Rogers issued his seventh walk of the game and was replaced by Mike Garman.

The Rangers committed 2 errors in the top of the eighth (putting them at 4 for the game) and the Royals loaded the bases with nobody out. Patek brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. But that would be all they would get.

The highest scoring team in the American League was held to just 5 runs in the 2 game series. And still won both games.

Final score: Kansas City 3 Texas 1.

The Rangers travel to California for a three game series that does not promise many runs will be scored. In fact, these are the two lowest scoring teams in the American League. They are also tied for the fewest home runs hit in the league. The Angels have had strong pitching and defense which is even worse news for the abysmal Texas offense. Only one team in the league has allowed fewer runs. Only one team has a lower starters ERA. And only one team has a better defensive efficiency than California. The Angels have lost 4 of their last 6 and are just 5-10 in May. These two teams played in Texas in April and the Rangers won 2 out of 3. The Rangers have lost RP Danny Fife for the rest of the year because of a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He is expected to miss 13 months.

The top of the first ended with Ryan striking out Howard with two men on. That put Ryan's strikeout total to 80 on the season which, surprise surprise, leads the American League.

Kubiak put the Rangers on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single. Nelson also got an RBI with a grounball out. A wild pitch and an error helped manufacture that run.

After three: Texas 2 California 0.

Hand struck out Berry in the bottom of the fourth for his 10th K of the season. Just 70 more to go to catch Nolan Ryan.

Ryan was having trouble with the strike zone and his 7th walk of the game came in the top of the fifth and loaded the bases with nobody out. That was followed by a run-scoring infield single by Harrah. Howard then brought a run home with a sacrifice fly.

Cepeda got the Angels on the board with a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth.

After six: Texas 4 California 2.

Ryan found his groove in the top of the seventh and struck out the side.

The Rangers got the first two men on base in the top of the ninth and the Angels pulled Ryan and brought in Dave Sells to pitch. The Rangers did not score as Burroughs flied out to retire the side and ended his hit streak at 12 games.

A one out walk in the bottom of the ninth ended the night for Hand as Bill Gogolewski was brought in to try and close it out. One 4-6-3 double play later and the Rangers losing streak ended at 5 games.

Final score: Texas 4 California 2.
